CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE

1920's, 30's 40's, 50's(Bulldog), 60's, 70's and 80's !

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking!!!

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a Bakkie on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds, KFC, Steers, Nandos.

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Chappies, Wilson 's Toffees, Wicks Bubble Gum and some crackers to blow up frogs with.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and cubby houses and played in river beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on DSTV, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents.

Only girls had pierced ears!

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time.......no really!

We were given pellet guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays!!

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!

RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MERIT AND NOT DUE TO BLACKMAIL, THREATS AND GUILT FROM THE PAST.... strange but true!

Our teachers used to belt us with big sticks and leather staps and bully's always ruled the playground at school.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.

They actually sided with the law!

Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like "Kiora" and "Blade" and "Ridge" and "Vanilla"

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 70 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO

DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

PS -The big type is because your eyes are not too good at your age anymore

Good stuff, my wife and I were talking the other night and I was telling her how my dad used to use his old truck to pull our sleds around the block at what felt like high rates of speed, it was up to us to miss the parked cars and other hazards! Now we would not be allowed to do it even if we wore a helmet...lol

Ha! What a truism you've created and a fun trip down memory lane.

Here, they have removed all swings from the school playgrounds as I'm sure some little idiot got hurt and it was the swings fault, not the fact that the kid probably jumped out of the swing and got hurt. We did that all the time and we just sucked it up and hoped our parents didn't find out or we would be hurting even worse, not sitting in court trying to get the swings removed. Only one example of the sheltered lives being lived these days...

Ah, life makes you tough...glad we had the chance as children to live it!!

Thanks much for the post.

Funny post and it is interesting to look at how different things were. Some things have changed for the good and some not, imo. I can recall my dad sending me down to the corner market to pick up 2 packs of Merit 100's and I could get a candy bar, I was 6 or 7 years old..lol. Now you can't sell cigarettes to anyone under 18 and you wouldn't let a 6/7 year old wander the neighborhood out of fear of kidnapping:)

I don't know about you but the McD in our area opened in 71 or 72. It was always a thrill to go there, it was a special event. I also remember the A&W stands where the waitresses would come out and put this tray on your car window for the food. We'd go in my dad's convertible. Ahhh the memories. Also, riding in the back seat but on your knees between the two front seats, that was cool. Today it's a ticket.

Your list mixes some reality with some fiction, and implies all of that was better than today.

For the record, no teacher ever hit a kid in my school in the 70s, and would've been jailed right quick if they'd tried.

And you speak as if bullies ruling the playground is a good thing, or kids eating lead paint, which still hurts a whole lot of children today.

But yeah, as a parent of young kids, I do miss the days of running around outside all day in summer without anyone worrying about it.

this sounds like a George Carlin routine. great stuff. I too remember fetching cigarettes for my dad when i was 9 or 10 and had to walk a mile or so into town! we (us 7 kids) had to ride in the back of the pick-up to get to town if we all wanted to go at the same time.

And little for those born in the 70's. But for those of us who were kids in the 60's, I think most of it applies very well :)

I recall being one of the few kids I knew who made it through the school years without a broken bone. It was normal to see at least one arm cast in the halls at any given time, and it was no big deal.

I seem to remember this list being posted a few years ago. YAY! We've survived another two or three years. ;-Þ

When I was 10 (in '82) I had a paper route. I would deliver 60+ papers to the front porches of every house and knocked on every door once a month for $3.50. On top of that, there was a bar en route where the bartender would always let me sit on a bar stool at the bar to cool off (or warm up) and give me a free coke. Those were the days...

ETA I think it was 3.50, 'cause $5.00 was the biggest tip I got from the old lady on top of the really big hill.

Actually I think that our kids would be better off if it was still like this. I got whipped a few times at school (by the teachers and principle) with a plastic paddle that had holes in it.That was in the 80's. And the bullies toughened up the kids.... You learned how to fight back when it was necessary.....The american society has become alot of liberal wusses. The type people that would catch a mosquito that had gotten into the house so that they could release it into the wild again to be free. The american kids need to toughen up in my opinion...

I actually only have one ear pierced to be honest. Twice in my left. The first is an 8 gauge and then next to it and a little up is the next smallest size 10 gauge. I didn't do it for the rebelion aspect like most of my friends did though. I just wanted it cause I liked the way it looked.

Still don't regret it at all.

I never did get a tattoo though... I just never found something that I knew I wouldn't get tired of you know? My band made a deal to get matching band tattoos if we could play for a living but not until then lol.

umm so if you are placed somewhere where a bunch of people abuse you and you couldnt do anything about it, you would somehow come out tough?

and my teachers used to hit us all the time, really cant say it made me a better (or worse) individual
