It would be quite helpful to have a section on the site where you can access all SC rulings on photo validations and not just on individual photo pages. If that's too much work then maybe just have the rulings going forward available in the archive once the feature is added? It would be preferrable to have a way to sort/search through it, for example by infraction type, date and rule set/version or just provide a search box. That way if you have a question about an aspect of the rules and can't get an answer from an SC before the submission deadline ends you can at least search the archive to see if the answer is there.
As an added bonus it would be cool to have an option to search for only those entries with before and after photo to compare as you read about the infraction. Since displaying the original isn't required and many don't upload them afterwards this is probably not really an option but I was thinking maybe make it an option when you submit to the challenges. For example, have a check box that asks for permission to display the original after the challenge is over (small version of course).

As long as context is included.
As we all know, the rules sets have gone through some changes over time so something that was accepted/not accepted in the past may produce a different outcome in the present. |

I would find this useful. I found drachoo's validation example from the crime scene challenge to be quite illuminating. I was worried that my cloning out a couple of leaves at the edge of the frame could be DQ'd and he made much larger changes than I thought would be acceptable. Maybe just a special forum to post these in, if making it a feature is too much to implement?

I suppose it could be simplified to just giving you a list of all the DQed images and each one of those are linkable to the photo page where you find the DQ message now. I just think there should be one place to go to find the DQed images rather than having to go to each and every challenge result looking for them. It's hard enough as it is to browse through the challenge history pages as it is.

With links to the rule set that applied at the time. Without context, it doesn't help with present situations. |

Maybe just having a new forum section called "Challenge rules and validations" where people can post their questions about rules or post their pictures which have been validated. That will at least make for one area people can search for examples.
People who have been around for a while will remember certain discussions (who can forget Brad's zoom blur plane shot vs. Joey's face shot?), but I think the "good" discussions are sprinkled throughout the forums. Putting them in one place will be helpful.

At least they are easy to find, always on the last page of the results.
Until fairly recently, DQd photos were not displayed at all -- there is some concern over DQd images receiving special/more attention than the legal entries. |

I too agree that the current discussions on interpretations of the rule sets has been quite illuminating.
I also think that there is no shame in illustrating these interpretations as the arise.
Perhaps we should face the fact that within the context of DPC, photography is not a science nor an art, but a sport where individuals compete for the acknowledgment of the judges. Like a sport the object of rules is to establish a level playing field and any tool which facilitates this goal should be implemented.
As an example, the game of golf is quite simple the rules can be explained in a relatively few number of pages. But as any golfer can tell you each handbook also contains several times that number of pages explain the interpretations of those rules in different situations. The logic being each golfer can find a situation which might be similar to his question and see how it was previously ruled.
Whether it is decided that annotating the rules as they are currently outlined or developing a separate search-able database would work better is merely details. The objective is to give all members the ability to make informed decisions about their images, which obviously isn't the current case.

Ummm - actually that wasn't my shot. I do remember the zoom blur plane shot that was the subject of teh heated discussion, but it wasn't mine.
I've only used one zoom blur shot in my 246 challenge images, but it was done in-camera. |

I said in my opening post sortable by ruleset/version. Yes knowing what ruleset it applies to would be ideal.

True but you'd have to go through each and every challenge to see the DQs and you wouldn't be able to filter out infractions that don't concern you.
