I'm planning to change my Sony DSC-V1 for one of those 2 models within few months but i just can't make a choice. On one side we have the F828 that seem to be an important breakthrough with is 4 color filter and is tremendous specification (8MPix, Varl Zeiss Vario-Sonar "T", adjustable lens angle like the 707 and the 717 etc.) i always had sony camera and liked them. on the other side you have the canon wich seems more professional to me. the controls seems to be more flexible, you can change the lens except to just have the possibility to add lens. I really dont' know and need your advice.

thanks.

Sony has always been better a video equipment, so if you think about it the F717 and F828 are just video cameras with really good chips, that take still cameras.

Canon on the other hand have been excellent in their photo equipment, so their line up would be more equivlent to a film camera.

If you are a Photographer at heart id say go for the canon, for the tilt on the sony I have always liked it. Adding lenses is really nice when you want to go farther than the zoom on the sony.

I'm in the same boat, nicklevy, except that I do have access to a 300D as well. Both are likely excellent cams and for all the good reasons.

Forcing a choice, I'd go for the F828, not because it is a better camera, but because I only live once and like the idea of knowing the eqipment I use better than the next guy. Hell, I'm beginning to take pitchers without thinking about camera, lenses, operation. This, to me, is one hell of an advantage. ;-)

I bought the Canon 300D after having the Sony 717.
All I can say is I love the Canon!
The Sony is good, but doesn't compare with the out of camera quality of a DSLR.

I'd be interested in swapping my F717 for a V1, so if you're at all interested in coming to some sort of arrangement PM me ;). The F717 is a great camera but I'd like something smaller to complement my 10D.

Cheers.

Nick

I would go with the 300D any day, but that’s just me.

There is no doubt about it the 828 will be a fantastic all round camera it has two proven predecessors, just look at the success that the 707 and the 717 have had on this site. Also as you currently have a Sony camera I guess you already have memory sticks that you will have to replace with CF for the 300D, therefore you will need to factor in the cost of more memory to switch to the 300D. Also I wouldn’t read too much in to the emerald channel it seems a bit of a gimmick in my opinion.

As far as the 300D is concerned, there are already several satisfied owners on this site alone and it is a scaled down model of the 10D which again is a VERY popular camera. I guess the main thing to consider is what lenses are you going to want with the 300D? Will you want a wide angle? Telephoto? Portrait? Macro? Obviously each of these will add to the final cost.

In short I guess what I am trying to say is...

The 300D is a fantastic and can offer a lot more flexibility, but the costs can mount up if you will be purchasing a few lenses.

If you haven’t already check out the reviews on DPReview...

While I think I am still leaning towards the Digital Rebel or similar DSLR when I am prepared to buy, I am also taking a hard look at the F828. My reasons are that I really like the swivel lens of the Sonys as well as the preview ability as well as several of the other features not found on the DSLR's. I find myself taking more creative shots where holding the camera in an usual position and relying on the preview is necessary. I like having a video mode as well. I know most people will say to just buy a dedicated video camera for that but my reasons are not about top quality, my reasons are for being able to take short video clips that help document an event. The 640x480 resolution of the F828's video would be ideal. I have no interest in dealing with a separate video camera for those occasions. The resolution of the F828 is not trivial and if the noise is kept low it may take excellent photos, especially with the improved lens. The noise from the smaller sensor of the sony could be a major drawback, however, and I am anxious to see a lot of sample photos to judge for myself. On the flip side, the ability to use a variety of lenses on a DSLR is a major bonus but it could get extremely costly. If I got the Digital Rebel I would get the wide angel zoom that came with the camera as well as the bigger zoom that was also made new for the camera and that would probably satisfy me for a while. I don't think the new emerald color used in the F828 to be a gimmick and many of the other features like Night Framing and Night Shot are significant to me as well. At least for me anyways, the decision is not so cut and dried even though, as I said, I am still leaning towards a DSLR. I would really enjoy framing my shots through a true TTL optical viewfinder again.

Just one thing to remember, when you buy lenses, you buy them for several 'bodies'. The lens I bought for the 10D I will still use in 2 years if I buy an other body one in 4 years if I buy a new one.

Regardless of that, I am sure both are excellent choices, just a matter of priority (no pun intended ;-) )

The F828 is huge. I think the F717 is a bit cumbersome at times. And the 828 is quite a bit larger.

It will be interesting to hold it and see how it feels when it comes out.

I just upgraded from the sony cybershot 4.1 mp to the 300d.
I can't say enough wonderful things about this camera.....it is wonderful. One of the reasons that I went this direction is because of the number of lenses that you can add to it. Nikon would of been my second choice.

I'm upgrading from my Sony Cybershot 3.3mp to the 300d tomorrow (hopefully!)

The accessories are on their way right now... :-)
