As many of you know-- we lost Riley recently and are looking to get another dog-
-
I have always wanted a Golden Retriever, And in todays paper, someone has listed AKC Goldens for 300 dollars.
I called him and they have 3 left 2 females-- I think we want a bitch this time-- last two dogs have been males--
Does anyone here own a golden? anything I should be worried about- any tips?

Our Golden is like one of our kids. One of the smartest and loving dog we every had. Doesn’t like to fetch, but will swim with you all day long. Great family dog. He’s a maleâ€Â¦Vega

Get her fixed a.s.a.p. otherwise, You shouldn't have much to worry about. From my expereince with dogs, Females always seem to be a little less agressive than males, However I currently have 2 female Austrailian Shepherds that came from the same liter, They are pretty calm when alone, But when they get together they fight for attention and do get pretty agressive at times. Other than that dogs are dogs. Some are smart and some pee on their food. |

My golden was my best friend for ten years.
Golden are a little more high maintenance than shorter hair breeds, but well worth the extra grooming.
(Just read Ace's post, Biscuit would play fetch all day, but won't go into water past his chest. lol)

This is Baxter Riley...
We've been blessed with good dogs but Baxter rates up among the top of them. He's affectionate with everybody including kids; he loves to fetch anything and loves to swim. We've never had any behavior issues with him at all. The only significant health issues has been with the ACL in both legs but that may have been brought on by the fact that he's a 95 lb brute (biggest golden that our vet has ever seen) that has been very active for 8 years. I wouldn't hesitate to get another golden. |

I used to have a Golden Retriever and a Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever. I loved both. They are wonderful dogs. I think the Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever has a prettier coat than a Golden Retriever though because it is red. :) |

I agree that goldens seem to have great temperaments, my little Birman cat was 'raised underfoot' in a household with a golden stud dog, kids, other cats, all running around together. She seems unruffled by dogs.
Anyway, going beyond temperament...you may have already done so, buy I would check up on any breed-related medical conditions, and ask for proof that tests have been done. If possible talk to people who actually own one of their doge. Check out the sire and dam too, if possible. Ask to see the kennels so you can see they're as clean as can be expected, all dogs look healthy and happy etc. If they show, or claim to, ask if the dog is only pet-quality, as opposed to show quality. Some breeders will charge less for an animal that would never make it in the show ring, and so long as they aren't serious defects, you may end up with a great pet.
And finally, please please please don't fall in love with the letters AKC. Any puppy mill could've bought an AKC-registered critter and tossed it into their gene pool, for those precious 3 letters alone. Also look at several Golden sites to get some idea as to what a Golden should look and move like, so you're not sold a pup, as it were...maybe even invest some time and visit a dog show, talk to some breeders there...good luck!

hahaha so true!
Golden Retrievers are beautiful dogs. Gentle, loving, loyal but they do seem to take a little longer to grow out of the puppy stage.
edit to add, check the hips.

A close cousin to the Golden Retriever is the English Setter. We have two, PIG and Sam. Along with Churchill, the three of them keep our days filled with joy and laughter. So, consider this bred too. The English Setters have hair instead of fur, so if you have allergies, then these are ideal household friends.

I've always loved them too, although I am leaning more towards a Labradoodle atm I've had enough of pet fur! LOL Good luck and whatever you end up getting happy puppy days to you! I've already picked out a name too.
