Convert a common phrase into literal terms and represent that in your shot.
eg.. "Stop and smell the roses", "Wake up and smell the coffee", "I was brought up in a barn", etc... |

Hmmm, neat idea, especially if the title of the piece had to be the phrase.
My mind is already ticking over ideas there.

I like this idea a lot. I would love to see a more 'abstract' phrase used so we wouldn't get a bunch of photos that are all similar in nature for the challenge.

How about.... F#*% you, and the horse ya rode in on!
Think that would score well? Not sure if it would be in the rules, either though. LOL
The phrase could be just about anything! FUN!!

What, as in "which came first, the chicken or ....."
Oops, forget I said that, I really don't want to get you started on chickens, it is bad enough with the horses ;)

I like it. We could get insects with "snug as a bug in a rug", nudes with "naked as a Jay Bird" and cats with "cat on a hot tin roof". And flowers could abound with "pushing up daisies" "a rose by any other name..." "tiptoe through the tulips".
It would be fun :)

mmm... even if I find it attractive, I have quite some concern about it. A website is reached from a world-wide audience and, maybe, what is literal in some cultures, or even in some places, is meaningless in others.
Interesting but too narrow. |

I think it's a good idea, but I dont really like being forced to title my photos in any particular way. I think the photo should be clear enough that people know what the phrase is when they look at it.

Well to use one of Excelsior's examples:
"Stop and smell the roses"
You could photograph somebody out walking their dog, bent over, smelling a rose bush.
That is a "literal" interpretation of phrase which has come to mean "slow down, take a moment to enjoy what is in front of you".
Another one might be:
"Don't make waves"
where you could have somebody standing completely still in the middle of a pool, the water perfectly flat.
Oh, and for anybody who wants to enter a (sleeping) dog picture, there is always "let a sleeping dog lie".

Literalisms, literally!
This page is a hoot...
Definitely worth mining for ideas
Most of these aren't dpc legal but should help folks looking for a visual explanation of what I think the contest is intended to be.
literally visual

You need a large handful of bird seed and one large stone.
Pile the birdseed near to somewhere you can hide, when two birds land and start feeding, throw the stone??
