Living in Japan I see so many mags I'd love to pick up and read, but my reading skills are just not that good, and never will be when it comes to Japanese. I'm out of touch with the photography world as far as new goes. I'm looking for a magazine that will take me beyond the basics. I just don't know what's good and what's not...help?

I was into magazines, but found it just repeated after awhile. Also most magazines are about equipment and what's Canon/Nikon are coming out with next. If find online sites have better and more up-to-date information.

LensWork doesn't focus on equipment, but more on concepts and style. I learned about it through the The Candid Frame (a podcast you should listen to also).

I subscribe to Rangefinder, After Capture, Professional Photograher, and Studio Photography. Each of them offers something different from the others and I look forward to getting them each month.

I also study photography via the Nordstrom catalog and Penny's catalog. :)

I don't have a subscription, but I buy Digital Photo Pro at the bookstore all the time. It has a good mix of articles about images, techniques (in camera and post processing), equipment, and business aspects of photography.

I subscribe to lots of magazines but none of them specifically about photography. Because I always hope to improve my landscape and nature photography...and because I enjoy reading non-fiction about the natural and historic world...I subscribe to magazines with excellent photography.

My list:
Smithsonian Magazine (my favorite for articles and pics)
National Geographic
New York State "Conservationist" (because I used to live there and love going back)
Maryland Life (because, for me, it always has good suggestions on places to see and events to try)
...etc.

...basically, so much is available on-line that satisfies me in the way of technicals I enjoy subscribing to magazines that go beyond that and address my general interests as well.

I get my photography kick at the same time as fueling my snowboarding addiction. Shred mags are stuffed full of absolutely killer imagery, and it doesn't hurt that I know or follow most of the contributing photographers (in the North American market, anyway). Next January, take a browse though some of the photo annuals when they're on shelves...

Snowboard Canada
Transworld Snowboarding
Snowboard Magazine
Snowboarder

...are the mags I currently subscribe to. I used to get National Geographic, but for some reason I just don't get excited about it as I used to. Maybe its the fact that I see more adventure and exotic locales in my snowboard magazines...
