Creative Lighting System allowing me to use the speedlight OFF the camera is cool. BUT does the on-board flash (Which does flash) affect the exposure of the picture, or does it flash PRIOR to the shutter opening for the speedlight flash?

For close up shots, the on camera flash will affect the exposure. More than a few feet away, the on camera flash doesn't affect the exposure, although I've seen a problem with a red dot in the middle of a really reflective subject. If you need it, Nikon sells a doohickey for about $15 that will block the on camera flash. An index card and a clothespin will work in a pinch, too.
