10 is 'perfect'
5 is 'average'
1 is 'the worst ever'
I don't know that i've ever given out a 10. |

I have given out 11 10s since I started here in Feburary.
What I find more interesting is how those photos ranked

That's pretty much the way I vote. The top 3 images of the challenge receive a 10 and two 9s. The rest is spread out fairly evening although it is rare for me to vote anything 3 and below (I like to reward the best, not punish the worst, that's just part of my nature).

4 10's in 5 years. Yes I am mean with them , to get a 10 from me a photo has to hit me in the face.

Looks like some people have made up a new voting scale: Bad <--> So rare that it captivates me instantly. While great for professional competitions, that might be a little unrealistic for an amateur learning site. There's nothing wrong with voting that way, but I don't require perfection to reward a great effort. What bothers me more is the people who give a glowing comment along with a vote of 5 or 6, which would bring down any decent score. :-/ |

I've never given out a 10, and only given a 9 once, but that 9 was to you. And no, I don't complain about my scores. ;) |

What is the big deal about being stingy and withholding all these 10 votes? Do the people who expect perfection from others do their part to also provide it?
I'm pretty free with my own votes of 10, because I think it is fun to get them and I like to think of how happy it makes someone else to get a vote of ten, too. |

I gave seven 10s in the recent free study. One took the blue, and two of 'em finished in the 200s. |

Have you had your monitor checked recently? It could be that, eye sight is another... xD sorry couldn't resist.
On the related note, I often give at least one 10 in a challenge that I am voting on.

I give out a lot of 10's 9's and 8's - 7's are 'eh' but 6's and 5's are by the oodles too
I tend to look at the image as best as I can from the photographers viewpoint "why did they take this image OOF? was there a reason? is it the shapes? the colors? the perspective interesting? expression ? does it look like a painting? abstract? etc... are the shapes interesting- is the tonal range pleasing in some way- what made them shoot -this- particular shot, and do I find it interesting enough to look at again? is it technical or artistic? is it an emotional image or is it more of a shoehorn as some call it? does it evoke any emotions in me even negative ones or ones I don't understand that might have been the purpose of the image..." and I score up and up accordingly...
i'd give out 100's if I could on some shots --sure I have my faves-- some of which strike mas a "WOW" and others strike me as "OMG what that person did to get this shot is awe-inspiring" some strike me as simple but effective and others strike me on an emotional level or as an artist --
each image has a diffrent impact and I try my best to seperate them while scoring them and not 'compare' and then go thru and compare among the scores that I distributed;
right? wrong? I don't technically -care- :) I enjoy voting on the higher end- enough people cut out artists legs from beneath them without a second thought -and not always because the image isn't good but because they had a bad day or their score is low or who knows what other reasons? so if my 10 cancels someones 1 at least I did something in taking time to vote and looking thru that artists eyes for a little while; I don't think any photo I've sene so far is 100% -BAD- tho of course there is always the future who knows i might see one that I find deserving as a 1... but not yet.
I don't vote in every single challenge (don't have the time i'm a single mom) but I do try to vote when I have time 100% on challenges even if I don't get to comment on them all! :)
I've given out a TON of 10's and would have given out more if I had taken even more time to stare at the photos in each challenge i think... because the more I look at images the more things I see and it clicks; shapes/light/shadows/DOF/overall iamge/crop etc...
i try to take a good amount of time on each image - (more than a few seconds of keyboard voting)
it is an ammature site for learning etc- and I look at it as us students able to give a pat on the back or word of encouragement to another peer- rather than a kick you down and beat you with my score kind of way i guess-
I do wish more people who give lower scores would come forward and comment on -why- they find it a -bad- photo;
I don't view 10 as PERFECT -- nobody and nothing is perfect; its an unatainable image that someone has in their mind and is usually extremely out of reach- 10 is GOOD or GREAT or Better than others that i've voted on -- but not perfect; perfection is not for us to judge unless we ourselves are perfect IMO
doesn't matter to me if people like what I say or dislike it i probably won't even look at this thread again :) but that's my .02 bits and I'll continue to vote accordingly :) and fave the images I like and enjoy or find artistically pleasing-- and the photographers that make me go "wow" with most of their portfolios too! :) :-D |

Between "Masks" and "Night Sky" I gave 28 10's and 2 sub-5's.
Most of the time a photog has put effort into an image entered so it very rarely deserves a sub 4. On the other hand I scale my high scores on the first pass up so the pick of that bunch get 10's |

I haven't given a ten yet (although I've only been around for a bit under a month) but I think it has to be visually interesting and have technical quality. That's about it to me. If the criteria for the challenge has been met to some extent, I vote around 5. If it's something that catches my eye, I go up around 7 or 8. Below 5 is reserved for people that I don't feel made a legitimate effort.
Submitting a very poorly focused photo (I'm not saying every shot has to be focused either...but you know what I mean) or one that is totally washed out is pretty lame, if you ask me. I think everybody on this forum can and should do better than that, and also has the time to. It isn't magical editing that makes a great photo, it's being at the right place at the right time and knowing what to do with that. You don't need National Geographic type stunning, but you can do better than shoehorning a poorly focused shot of your pet or child into a challenge with specific guidelines. It's kinda disrespectful to the folks that actually put effort into things, if you ask me. If a shot has nothing to do with the challenge criteria but is a great shot, I'll vote that low too because the point of a challenge is to guide somebody in their creation- maybe outside their comfort zone or maybe to expand their depth, AND TO AT LEAST CHALLENGE THEM in their photography, be it by topic or time limitation.

Obviously its up to you to decide how to use the voting scale, but I do use favorites for the same reason that you use 10s for. If an image captivates me instantly, I add it as a favorite and vote a 10. If I feel its among the best in the challenge, but doesnt captivate me, I still vote it a 10. Also, its much easier to go back and look at your favorites, than to look for your 10s.
