i guess about 90% of my abandoned places pics were kinda dangerous to shoot, because a)trespassing is mostly prohibited so if security gets yer a$$ you're likely to be prosecuted or b)these places are cordoned off so getting into the building or area often requires climbing walls, roofs, fences or squeezing through small dirty holes or windows and such or c)some buildings are very unstable and likely to collapse, so every step can be your last (i ALWAYS go alone so if i break a leg or something worse happens nobody will notice) and d)you never know who or what you might suddenly come across...(read image discription for details)

but it's always a blast and adrenalin kick visiting these places and every time i manage to get out of a building or abandoned place looking dirty and sweating i can appriciate the civilized clean world even more than before...;)

what required quite some self conquest was to get this shot

because i suffer from acrophobia, so leaning over the edge of that high board was quite some crazy thing to do for me ;D

oh and i sometimes shot under quite extreme conditions, too i.e. in ecuador on mountains at >5000m alt. and snow/fog or during my stay in iceland in heavy storm and tempertures under -20°C

(which is not very common for me because i live in moderately climated germany, so some of you might say it's not that crazy but you're used to it)

so to sum it all up it seems like i'm quite an adrenaline junky, huh? LOL
but i see i'm in good company here... ;)

Good one, had to wipe my monitor.

I followed her around for 10-15 minutes, had my face within inches of her several times. When I got home I found out she is a tarantula hawk and just so happens to be the owner of the most painful sting of any bug in North America.

I never got within striking range, but I believe it's a Mohave rattlesnake. Very deadly. It was no doubt a rattlesnake.

My wife was with me...

A lot of commenters considered this crazy...

One interchange between us that I didn't mention in the photographer's comments was a moment between us that was like the screaming scene in E.T. when the character played by Drew Barrymore comes face to face with E.T. in front of the closet and each of them take turns screaming in fear of each other.

This alligator obviously felt comfortable hanging out under the dock that I was kneeling on to get the shot. It would come out after the fish that I was attractng by tossing bits of pretzels on the water, but it wouldn't venture far from the dock. Even with the Tokina 12-24 it was usually too close to me to get a good shot that included his snout from the angle that I wanted. I would crouch or kneel down over and over again between getting up and walking away to check the LCD, readjust settings and very slowly go back to my position to kneel down again to recompose the shot. I could easily tell that he was scared of me and very wary of my actions and I certainly was of his. At one point when I was checking the last round of shots on the LCD the alligator moved away to the perfect position and the perfect angle. This time I quickly moved back toward my position on the edge of the dock. When I moved so quickly he suddenly let out a loud grunt which caused me to stop dead in my tracks. My sudden halt startled him further and he threw himself into reverse with a broad swipe of his tail and went underwater backwards. This sudden and powerful move scared the hell out of me and caused me to scream and jump about five feet up and five feet backwards at the same time. The funny thing was that all these seperate actions between us happened in about two seconds with each of us taking turns. I moved quickly, he grunted, I came to an immediate halt, he swooshed underwater, and I jumped out of my skin...back and forth, back and forth.

Afterwards, we both calmed down and looked at each other as if to say "Now that was silly, wasn't it?"

I posted this in another forum a while back.

I went up to 2 total stragers and told them they had beautiful daughters and asked if I could take their picture and put it on the Internet.

The only thing that could have made it feel creepier is if I had a slightly runny nose and wiped it with my sleeve as I asked.

"ITALIAN JOB - 2003"

One of my most favorited/enjoyed movies; especially when I own a MINI Cooper of my own! I called up a couple of guys in my MINI club and said; "HEY, can you help me with a photoshoot?"

"A who what shoot?"

"A photoshoot, see I'm involved in this online photo contest where....." [a couple more minutes of yaking to follow]

Well long story short I went to where I work and borrowed their bucket truck. These guys showed up with their cars "MINI Coopers like the movie", and we shot away.

It only took them about 4-5 passes to get an acceptable shot. I do know a little more about how I might set up the next scene but with the bucket truck and getting other people involved. This shot pretty much takes the cake for the most effort I've put into one yet.

OUTTAKES:

A little bit of a different border:

I had to chuckle when I read this. I have several abandoned place photos, and have snuck past "no trespassing" signs a few times. My husband hates when I do this, but does go along to protect me.

Stood in front of a speeding (okay it was only going 18MPH) train... but I did it twice (hmmm, actually I did it four times).

And, oh yea.... -36 wind chill.

i already mentioned iceland in my previous post, so i'm back to add another story.
because actually the craziest photorelated incidents happend to me during my visit to iceland in july 2005.
i stayed at asij place the whole two weeks and soon had to experience his creativly-crazy ideas he tend to suddenly bring up for photoshoots.
so i.e. in this one

he *kindly* told me to take off my shirt (it was kinda cold that day and a familiy with small kids was having a picknick just a few meters away from the waterfall), to then climb up on the (very slippy) rocks and to hold that pose for *just* a few minutes while he was taking the shot.
oh well i think it was well worth it cus i still love this shot! :)

the next trip brought us on a huge lava field in the middle of the night where he knew some caves. so we went down into one (kinda broke in actually, as entering without a special guide was prohibited) and followed the cave (which was not a tourist kinda cave, so we had to find the way ourselves and climb over huge stones) for about one hour until we found the end (and then all the way back). all the time down there i was just too effin scared and concentrated on where to go to think about taking photos. this is one of the few i took tho:

on the way back from the cave trip (it was like 2am already) he stopped by a small waterfall and came up with the idea that he could stand *inside* the waterfall (water was coming from a nearby glacier!) while i was lighting him with a flashlight and pressing the shutter!!!

and even tho i had a great time there i'm telling you these Icelanders are the creeziest of ALL!!! :D

I am sure they would have thought you were flat out insane had they know you used a 12-24mm lens for the shot!!! ;)

That's not crazy. That's stupid.

Yea, crazy for sure! Who would risk their camera that way?

On my way to Alaska, I came up on a herd of wild buffalo not far off the roadside. I pulled over, grabbed my gear, and made my way out into the middle of the herd to get this shot.

People driving past were yelling stuff about me being "crazy" or "insane"

Heh. I'm shooting from the rock ledge by your head. I didn't actually think it was all that dangerous, the rock is exceptionally hard to slip on there...

This one was pretty intense:

And this is underneath a glacier:

Yeah, and he could have spilled his beer too. That guy at the canyon definitely had to be a DPC'er LOL.

Hey Robert, I'll see your gator and raise you one, : )

ShutterPug, I will be in Montana next month, and maybe I will get an opportunity to get crazy with the buffalo up there. I hear that they are not at all like cattle in temperment, and can be quite dangerous.

It wasn't a still image, I was shooting for the local television company covering a local high school football game. I had a camera down on the sideline. I was positioned on the opposite side of the offensive team so I could frame the pass coming over the scrimage line, probably about 20 - 25 yards back. The play started and as my camera went live the ball came straight up and over, into the lights and I captured a beautiful silhouette of the ball, it was like Remember the Titans. So the ball starts dropping and the horizon comes back into frame, and all I'm thinking is 'THIS IS BEAUTIFUL! I CAN'T BELEIVE IM GETTING THIS!!' And at this point there's a reciever and two defenders coming straight at me, just as he cought the ball he falls right in front of me with the other two tackling him, swept my feet out from under me, slid the camera right off the back of my shoulder and took the wind right out of me. Right before I went down they switched to a wide shot, so the footage is still there of me getting totally wiped out, but damn it was a great shot.
