I think it could be beneficial in some ways to reset the favorite photos and favorite photographers lists here on DPC. The current lists have been active for quite some time and I wonder if it would be interesting to see where the chips fall if the lists were reset.

The current site favorites page is somewhat stale because it now takes something really incredible to climb to the levels required to make it on that page.

Resetting the lists would not be entirely bad because everyone could go back and re-add any favorite photos or photographers as they see fit.

Thoughts?

I agree that if you're starting from ground zero, it would take an incredible effort to make to the site favs as it stands. You're fighting a lot of history.
I think that as an alternative to resetting everything, we might consider changing how the site favs are calculated. I would suggest that the site favs be calculated on the number of photos selected as favorites in the past N months. This both encourages more submissions and eliminates some of the "name recognition" factor, since i think people are more egalitarian with their selection of favorite photos than favorite photographers. I think a good value of N might be 3 months.
Personally, I'd not like to see the counters reset, since I've got few enough fav photos already, LOL.

I think the idea of a "rolling window" is a great one. It would keep the list dynamic and be a better reflection of why TODAY's favorites are.

no reason. those photos are up there for a reason. they're amazing. they're a reminder and an example of what is great photography.

John

I love the idea!

The intention with my other thread was to draw attention to the new talent that has joined.

Maybe they could create a hall of fame or etc.?

I would like to see the statistically favorites list brought up front where it is easier to find also. Or get more creative with it and do a weekly or monthly list.

John, I noticed that you are wearing the purple shirt again?
Welcome back to the site council :) I love the tutorials you have been working on.

This is a cool suggestion and even cooler coming from the guy standing on the top. I think longevity should have some rewards, so it doesn't bother me at all that I wont make the list. But it would be a neat idea to have all the favorites fall off the list after 12 months and have a window or something showing the ones that are about to drop so you can elect to keep them. I think there might be a bunch that were selected by people that are not active participants here any more. I'm not sure it will change things much, but it might help keep the stats current.

I think we should keep the original, but also have one that resets every quarter or something like that. It's taken me aaaaages to reach 70 favs and I'd hate to see that suddenly drop to 0 :(

Good idea, John, was thinking that exactly the other day. Radical changes though are usualy not too popular here. I think Konador's idea would do it.

It takes enough time for people to vote on challenges, let alone re-visit images.

I think there should be extra pages added showing all the rankings instead, eg:
View top 100 favourites photos added within last X weeks/months
View top 50 favourites photographers added within last X weeks/months

I think these are excellent ideas. Maybe a complete list like the one we have now and a '6 month' list that shows the overall favorites during the past 6 months?

It seems we're all pretty much in agreement that we like the "all time favs" the way they are, and certainly they do honor those who have sustained a high level of excellence in the long haul.

It also seems that some form of "moving window" average statistics would be appreciated. It might be fairly easy to implement a selectable time window from a pull-down. Choices might be 1 month, 3 months, 6 months 1 year, all time. Kinda encapsulates both ideas.

Kudos to you great photographers and long-timers willing and gracious enough to make room for the rest of us. That really is the kind of thing that keeps me motivated on dpc. Thanks and I too like the idea of '2 approaches', you deserve your recognition.

Are inactive members ever cleared from the logs? If all of the favorite picks are from active members, and we all have the ability to go back and add or delete from out lists, then I don't really see the need to reset it.
