Hi. I'm looking for a descent fog/smoke machine for my studio. Portability would be nice and i don't want to pay an arm and a leg. I thought I would ask here first cause you guys know everything!...

Thanks
Ben

I got one years ago and can't remember how much I spent on it. It's the same type Joey Lawrence has/had. You put a "fog-fluid" into it, plug it in, and run it via remote.

No advice from me on a machine, except to say that the fog from them can be tough to control, and tends to rise and dissipate too fast for my liking. Joey rigged up a vacuum hose from the machine to a box full of ice and then out the other end. That cools the fog which causes it to stay closer to the ground in a more cohesive, desirable way.

That's your fog tip of the day. :-)

Good tip Slip! We used to make it with a barrel of hot water, and drop dry ice into it back in my rock'n roll days. They are usually available used on line if you look in Flea Bay or the big Azon.

Our fog machine has a built-in compartment for ice cubes, and a drain tube. My wife bought it at a costume/party supply store. It has a push button that controls the fog. I don't remember exactly, but I think she paid about $30 for the machine. She also bought a gallon of the fog juice (which I believe is simply water & glycerin). I don't remember what she paid for the juice.

Fog machines work better when the air is cool, because heat makes the fog rise and dissipate.

Here's a sample...

To Mick's point... here's the trick to laying down some REALLY dense fog:

1. get a large garbage can (I used a Rubbermaid heavy duty one)
2. get ~ 10-20' of aluminum duct material (like a dryer vent) THIS SHOULD BE METAL to keep it cold.
3. cut 2 holes (opposite sides) in the garbage can to feed the duct tubing through.
4. coil the ducting inside of the garbage can and feed the 2 ends through the holes.
- I have one end sticking out ~5", and the other is ~3'
5. fill the garbage can with ice (regular crushed cubes) - I can typically fit 4 bags in the middle of the ducting coil
6. place the fog machine so that the fog spout fires directly into the short duct opening (I have mine on a stand about 1" away)

I've played around with different ends on the long (output) end of the tube, and found that by attaching a wide cardboard box (with a small horizontal slit at the bottom of the box) lays down an awesome low wide pattern.

As the fog chills, it becomes extremely dense... and sticks to the ground before eventually dispersing.
We use this at Halloween to cover the entire front yard in a thick low blanket of fog.

I'm not at home, or I'd upload some pics (I'll try to do that later).

DAMHIKT, but be careful with breathing the fog made with fog juice. It has a laxative effect.
