Hi, I recently wrote a short article on creating a window box for doing ultra cheap isolation shots and real soft shadows. I use mine all the time and was curious if anyone else uses homemade equipment. If so did you get the idea from a website or think it up on your own.
I have always enjoyed building my own equipment when I can, saves some money and is fun to do. Before I bought my alien bees with softboxes I also built a couple homemade softboxes. They worked ok, but weren't at all portable and were tough to store. I have been trying to think of a way to build my own portable, adjustable, light blocker/gobo for doing studio shots to get better contrast, but can't really come up with a good way.
Anyway, would love to hear if anyone has any tutorials or articles that they have tried out and use the equipment they made.
For those interested, the window box article is at //www.sprintingturtles.info/WindowBox.htm |

I really liked the article. I also liked how you showed an example of your box. There are so many good tutorials out there with no pictures, which does people with low attention spans, like me, no good.
Did you use copy paper? |

Thanks. Yeah, I think it was the legal stuff, as white as I could find. The seamless paper is "card stock" type material, also as white as I could find. I think I bought it at Fred Meyer for around 1 dollar. It is fairly thick so it doesn't crumple with objects on it. The photos are a little sad, but I have a terrible time trying to visualize things and trying to describe the window box was difficult. |

Here's my home-made 70softbox. Cost me about $10. I can put it up or down in about 1 minute, and it's fairly robust. The inconvenient bit is the ladder-stand, which is a bit bulky and not so convenient...

Here's some of my favourite photos taken with it...

Folds up nice and small, that is really cool. Ladder stand...not so cool. I have one nikon sb-600 and that softbox looks great for the speed flashes.
Nice photos by the way, seems to produce a very soft light.
