Hey...congratulations! Exciting to "find" some money that gives you a chance to do something fun or different. For what it's worth, I really like my 40D, but I didn't consider or look at the 5D so I can't really compare.

Do you need someone to go to Hawaii with? Someone to teach you how to use your new Canon? Some to take on a date?

:)

That is super cool! I'd go with option B for sure and a vacation to try out all the new gear! JM2C.

Congratulations, Leah! I think a 40D would be a great investment, plus a couple of L lenses as soon as the rebate starts. Happy shopping!

ok so the 40D sounds better overall but it seems like the larger sensor on the 5D will make it easier/less expensive to buy more lenses. Is that right? 40 or 5, 40 or 5, 40 or 5? Ahhhh! So hard to pick!

I'd say it was the other way round, actually - not only are EF-S lenses incompatible with the full-frame 5D but you would need some serious glass to get the best out of it as well. I know you have the 10K (congratulations by the way!!) but personally I'd get the 40D with more good glass. Then spend the rest on an amazing holiday and show us the pics when you get back!

Don't count on it.

Most quality full-frame lenses aren't cheap.

See 16-35 f/2.8
The 17-40 f/4 isn't terrible, but then again...
You won't want to consider the 50mm f/1.8, but the f/1.4 is the same for either cam.

I prefer using it on the 5D though...

You're still going to want to get a 70-200 f/2.8L IS. Once you have that, you're in the clear!

Why not pick up a 30D/40D and lenses and wait for the 5D II in september? You'd get used to using the DSLR, playing with lenses, and you'd be able to take advantage of those funky early bird specials like kirbic did when he got his 5D from dell... SWEEEET...

Then you'd be in a much better position to know that your lenses are problem free when you have to take your 5D II in to get the early bugs worked out of it... :)

Oh and don't forget a couple of 32GB CF cards... oh on second thought, wait on those... never know where the 5D will go for storage. *wishes fervently for dual slots*

Oh and if anyone tells you to get something not-camera related, ignore them!

Congratulations!!!

Oh...if you are wanting a good trip to Hawaii with extra after a nice new camera...good luck! We just got back from a week in Maui in April. Condo and airfare booked with the Hawaii visitors bureau is alot cheaper than anonline travel service we found. Had round trip airfare, a condo at Maui Hill resort(7 days, 6 nights), and a nice new Mustang covertable for the week, and cost us just under $3,000 total. Food was really affordable with coupons at the resort areas, the activities (snorkle at Molokini crater, sunset dinner cruise, helicopter ride around the island), are REALLY cheap if you take 2 hours out of your trip to listen to a timeshare presentation and get their discounted pricing just for attending. We spent way too much on gifts and keepsakes though. Ended up total for the trip was about $6600, but was a trip of a lifetime!!! We are going back in 2 years, but this time taking the kids and inlaws along.

p.s. be sure to make a morning trip to Haleakala for a sunrise that will blow your mind!!!

no processing on these pics...straight from camera....

Is the 5D really that much better that the 40D?

It depends upon your needs. The wide angle of a 5D can be matched on a 40D with a 10-22 lens (at pretty much the same price as a 5D alone), but matching the telephoto end of a 40D with a full frame camera would cost you [another] fortune. The 5D offers slightly better noise performance, a shallower DOF and a bit more resolution, but otherwise I think the 40D wins hands down with faster performance, live view, some weather sealing, dust removal, etc.

FWIW, I probably called in 20 or 30 times for the same contest, but never got through.

How does the 5D have shallower DOF?

And to the OP: Congrats! Enjoy and have fun!

Congratulations! See, perseverance and a plan, has paid off. (not lottery tickets)

"Never Say Never" and "Not in A Blue Moon" were names of some Mega Yachts.
Okay so you've got some dough for some "tools".
If you like photography, here a is a challenge.
Buy one good camera and one good lens.

Then see how fast you can make $20,000 dollers. Time limit is 6-months to 1-year. Then take a vacation with your camera. Of course write off the vacation as a business expense for your photo business.

Here are a couple of books to buy.

The main reason: a 5D will capture the same view with a 16mm lens that you would get with a 10mm lens on a 40D, but the shorter focal length of a 10mm lens means that the 40D image will show much greater DOF at the same aperture. The same principle makes it tough to get shallow DOF with the small sensors of most P&S cameras.

It's due to the magnification ratio due to the smaller sensor, and NOT the focal length.

BTW, what lens can you put on a 40D to give the equivalent FOV of a 12mm lens on a FF camera?

When I was deciding on what camera I wanted to buy, I found a local camera shop with comparable prices that was willing to trade in the camera I bought within a year for up to 60% of the cost. So I went with the 40D, thinking after I get used to it, if I want to upgrade, I can trade it in next year.

Not saying every place can do that, but you can shop around and see if there are places willing to do something similar...
