Well my first challenge, odd, I got a 4.3....my next challenge I entered, games, I got a 4.8. I can only hope to move up from there. If with every challenge I move up a few points then Im happy. I still have a few more days for my score to raise. Im happy |

I didn't enter this challenge. I am half way through voting and wow there are a lot of photos that are tack sharp, not softly focused at all!

I agree Karen - some of them are great shots, but I wonder if some are getting confused between 'soft focus' and 'shallow depth of field'
On another note - going down still

Strikeslip just reminded me, This is the first roll of "Hat Awards", so I would like to see some high votes... Who is getting the HAT?
or we can wait until the end, but let's make it more fun.
Any 7+? I see some wonderful photos could be getting around 7+ already ;) |

Not exactly what I was expecting out of this shot, I was expecting a bit higher, one frustrating thing for me is looking through and seeing a bunch of shots that aren't even soft focus, and knowing that they will score a lot better than me. Oh well though, we'll see how it goes.

Yeah there were some really awesome shots that were dang sharp though, but a lot of voters just vote on what looks good.

I didn't enter but I did vote and there were some beautiful shots but were tack sharp which unfortunately didn't fit with the challenge. Then again though there were some wonderful soft focus shots. Did anyone else notice an abundance of dandelion and horse photos? LOL

Well I'll not be getting 7+ this challenge, so no hat for me.
I've been over 6 all day until the voting in the last hour took me down

Interesting that you point that out...but I'm not sure what challenge you're looking at. ???
I have a little time before American Idol, so I took a quick count of subjects used in this (Soft Focus IV) challenge:
#1 subject by a wide margin is FLOWERS, with 60 entries (30% of the challenge totals).
#2 subject is kids, with 24 entries (12% of the challenge totals).
#3 is adult portraits, with 18 entries (9% of the challenge totals).
These three categories alone account for 51% of all challenge entries. :-)
Next, at #4 is horses, with 9 entries.
Followed by dogs/cats at #5, with 8 entries.
The 6th category I counted was dandelions, with 7 entries.
Just thought I'd post observations from a more accurate/real numbers perspective. :-D

Well I am disappointed with my score, I did not think it would be a ribbon winning image but did think it would be above my average.
I love my image, so I guess I should just be happy about that.
I was going to comment on all the images, but I feel that maybe thats not a good idea, as maybe I don't understand just what soft focus should be like, and therefore I may not comment fairly.....
What do you think.....
I have done a 100% vote already..

I think with soft focus what we want to see is halo effect around everything we see on the photo. I sure have on mine, and very visible, and some of the photos are exactly what soft focus is. It is what you see when you look at behind a little blurry glass, not much, just a little... that gives halo around the subjects.
I think :P |

As I looked through the challenge and started voting, I noticed a great deal of entries that perhaps didn't quite meet the challenge. I used to be a real stickler about this. However, I have given a great deal of leeway to the entries in this challenge. Soft focus can encompass many different forms...from completely soft/out of focus to just barely soft. I don't know, maybe I've just become soft (no pun intended!) but I know most everyone really tries hard on this site to "get it right" and I think we all sometimes deserve a break from the DNMC Nazis. I am currently at my lowest score EVER on DPC. It's not really breaking my heart, but I do wish people would chill a bit and try and give people a bit of a break. Or don't, whatever. |

Hey I got one from her too, it made my day. BTW I turned off scores and I'm gonna see if I can make it through the week without turning them back on to check, I'm trying to break the addiction.
