Props to those of you who have been using manual cameras. It's really hard. I just got my Minolta Z1 and I realized I have no bearing on what settings work for differnt light situations. Does anyone know ofa refernce for these kind of things? Also how do you create those macro shots with the narrow field of focus. Thanks.

You need to start reading about 'metering'. The camera reads incoming light and tells you how you can properly expose the photo.

Depth of field is a function of aperture, focal length, and distance to subject.

Exposure

This has been the best tutorial for me so far on lighting and exposure: The Ultimate Exposure Computer. Gives pretty simple and straightforward explanations of all the basics related to light and exposure.

I also know John (Setzler) is working on (may have finished?) a pretty extensive tutorial on exposure. I haven't gotten a chance to go through it yet, but I've read some rave reviews. :) I think there's a link in the Tutorials section under the Learn menu above. If not, search the forums - he's posted some update notices lately.

edit Oops, John beat me to the punch...

I really do recommend John's tutorial, it was a great help when I was shooting still life.
