A shot from my outing, not so much an "outtake" I guess since I never considered entering it.

I was torn between two -- both of which I felt carried story. This one I felt though simply caused the viewer to imagine the story and my entry, I felt, actually conveyed the story.

I was wrong. Perhaps on both counts.

A bit late on the outtakes, but someone just posted a comment and added it to their favorites, so I figured I'd share...

Submission: "The Secret Garden"

Outtake: "Over the River and Through the Woods"

Both images were taken at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. I had other pictures in this tree lined path and thought it would make a great entry for stories. So off I headed to Hamilton with daughter in tow. While reviewing all the images from that day, I ultimately decided with the Secret Garden Entry. I didn't like the lighting in the outtake and was having great difficulty fixing it while keeping it looking natural.

Incidentally, part of the decision was actually made shortly before arriving at the park while I was composing the image in my head. All the sudden it dawned on me that I should have dressed her in red, preferably with a hood. Given the lack of Little Red Riding Hood attire, I sought other areas that might have worked. The rest is history.

Edit: Added titles.

I think your outtake would have ribboned.
Easy to say after the contest, but I really believe that.

Oh please don't tell me that. Maybe I was too attached to it (or to what I wanted it to be) that I just didn't like it. In particular, the fact that the path is a single line of trees which allowed too much light through. I was looking for mysterious/scary woods. Not a light at the end of the tunnel woods.

What really irked me is that the forecast called for overcast and chance of rain. When I left, it was broken clouds. By the time I got there, nothing but clear blue skies.
