I haven't started a thread in a long time, but when I searched and didn't find this being talked about yet, I had to!

Fla. Teacher Accused Of Wizardry

Is there more to this story or is Florida this far gone?

gawd, we have too many stupid people in this world. Where is Darwin when you need him?

That's just really, really sad. And scary. I think the US is about to implode.

Chemistry teachers beware! If they fired this guy for slight of hand then there's no telling what they'll do to you people manipulating molecules.

But seriously, what happened to the toothpick?

EDIT: I can understand the action against him if he was showing his students his "magic wand."

That's pretty sad. Especially when there's a teacher in CA being accused of molesting several female students. God forbid this teacher tries to entertain the students with a cheap easy magic trick! Oh wait, sorry is it public school, cuz you can't say God there!

Darn muggles are back at it again. I bet he wouldn't have gotten reprimanded if he pulled a penny out of a kid's ear though.

Does this mean I am a witch because I read the Harry Potter books, watched the movies and I live in Florida, Oh my! This is probably a misunderstanding. Need more facts before judging.

What's wrong with Florida?

It's the Floridians. The same people who brought you the "hanging chad".

Congo police arrest penis-snatching sorcerors!

Same bull, different continent.

I can see him being fired if there was a list of offenses like they say in this article, but even in this article it mentions that the letter mentioned magic tricks in the list of offenses. It's still a little weird.

Then there's the news station aspect of it that went with his side of the story, because it was obviously catchier.

I'll just go ahead and stick with my original assumption that everyone in Florida is insane. (Case in point manic and chiqui)

Hey I'm from Florida and I can tell you very simply what is wrong with us. The combo of the heat, humidity, and the lack of anything modern, drives everyone crazy. I try to stay as cool as possible to prevent going insane but having no good computer stores, no good camera stores, and no good art stores near by are doing their damnedest to push me over the edge!

Gotta say that was an irresponsible piece of reporting. Read Louis' linked article to get the full story. It's really a non-story.

But I will say that whenever a bizarre or really dramatic news story comes on the TV, my first thought is that it must be in Florida. And 9 times out of 10 it is.

I'm also hesitant to really take sides without knowing all the facts.

In my school district there are certainly subs from time to time that screw up or have bad days, but we give them feedback and they tend to be better the next time. Perhaps this guy is a real nut that shouldn't be around kids and the administrators just made the mistake of including the magic tricks in their list of complaints.

Then again, have you seen Jesus Camp? I'll never forget the anger the directer of that camp had as she ranted to little children about how Harry Potter is a warlock and warlocks should be put to death. She was SO serious and angry about it I didn't know if I should be laughing at her or crying for the kids growing up with that kind of insane brainwashing. The crazies have escaped Fla. I'm afraid.

I wonder who this kid's father was and how influencial he is. That must have been one terrifying toothpick trick for a middle schooler to become "traumatized."

"One student in the Rushe Middle class apparently took the trick the wrong way, Piculas said. He said he was told the student became so traumatized that the student's father complained."
