One night a few years ago I went outside for some reason and looked up. Right above me was this round white halo with pink and red streaming from it...yes the aurora borealis was VERY active and I could see it in the middle of town. I grabbed the wife and kid and drove about 10 miles out of town to get a better look. It was unbelievable how the colors and light danced so effortlessly. Unfortunately I wasn't into photography like I am now, so I never got any shots of it, but the next time it happens, I'll be there!
Thanks everyone for posting your images, it helps those that can't see it.

Amazing Ref'! Great work!
I went out to see, and didn't see anything.. Now that I know it dies down and comes back, I should look again!

Thanks everyone
for those who were curious (but now it's too late..) i took these at F2, 26mm (had my wide angle lense on) at varies the exposure time from 10 to 20 seconds depending on the brightness of the sky at that time.
i edited one of them a bit to get a more dramatic effect (actually, it's the first one i posted in this thread) .. levels, and some editing on the houses just for fun :) (the original post's pic was completely untouched)

What great shots. I been looking here in So. Colorado, but it rarely makes it here. In the late 70s we had them once, and I saw them in rays of yellow, reds, and greens with Pike's Peak in the background. I'll be looking, but clouds have been with us several days now. Van |

Anyone seen them on the west coast here? We're between 48 and 49 here in Victori but it was cloudy last night. Clear today, so I figure I might try to get out and see something this evening. |

These shots are incredible. I've never seen it in real life. Thanks for the shots. I guess I live too far south. However, we've had our own "special" lights here in San Diego the last week. This shot is some color in the sky for a different reason: Fire. This house is at the top of our hill, but with the raging fire in the distance behind it, it looks almost haunted.
Haunted House
Perhaps I could have used it for the Halloween Challenge, were I a member.
