So my parents are giving me some money to buy ONE piece of photography equipment. Originally I was going to purchase the Canon 10-22 because I'm traveling to 4-5 different countries in Asia + Australia this summer. All I have right now is a lousy 18-55 plastic lens. But then I discovered about the Alien Bees, which are at a great price and of awesome quality (or so I've heard), and most of the shots I take are indoor using house lamps. I'm thinking it's more logical to buy the lights now. Anyways I'd love to hear your opinion.

Because of this I say the easy choice for me would be the 10-22mm hands down. Forget the lights. You can get some off brand flashes for cheap.

Alien Bees are already fairly cheap, I don't think I can come by much cheaper.

You won't want to haul the lights around Asia & Australia...get the lens! :)

you can get off brand lights for as little as $120 for two lights, two stands, and two umbrellas. You could also buy a few Sunpak hot shoe flashes for about $100 each if you wanted to go that route. I bought some on EBay and they worked fine.

katmystiry bought them from me and I am sure she can provide some example shots taken using these lights.

Oh get a LENS!

You won't know yourself with a better lens - especially while travelling.

I LOVE my 10-22. Additionally for only a few dollars how about also getting a 50mm 1.8 - it's SO worth adding to your kit - sharp, small and fast - it will really do SO MUCH for you, with very little to carry.

Actually I just saw something off Ebay for that lens for 10 bucks. Also it's right here in Toronto.

Don't even think about those lights! GET THE 10-22!!! You won't regret it!! Plus you will get amazing shots of your travels. Those lights can't do that for you.

If traveling Lens, if stationary, lights.

I'd say get the lens, as well. Ultrawides are a ton of fun; my Tokina 12-24 practically never leaves my camera, unless I want to do macro work :D

Get the tripod! I don't think you will enjoy the case that much.

jk

Go for the glass!

You'll get a lot of great shots with the new lens on your travels, but if you mostly do indoor shots I would get the lights. I cannot begin to explain how much of a difference it will make in the quality of your pictures.

Maybe get the lens, travel with it, then if you don't like it ebay it and get the lights, best of both worlds!

Lens. Do it. Now! Don't be swayed. Lens Lens lens Lens....

LENS

... but think it thru. The 10-22 is kind of a "specialty lens" because it's so wide. Given that the only other lens you have is the kit lens, you may want to go for a lens that will be useful in more situations, like the 17-40L or 17-55 2.8 IS.

Don't get me wrong, the 10-22 is awesome ... i want one myself :)

Lens! You can usually improvise with lighting or find cheap flashes listed on your local craigslist but you cannot, however, improvise a lens(unless you make one of those tennis ball can macro lens:) Since you will be traveling the world you will not be dragging those alien bees with you anyway and they will be at home all lonely.

you're travelling the world and you're torn between lights and a lens? what will you actually be able to use?

I'd go for the lens. Not sure about the one you mentioned though... i'd prefer something a bit more versatile if i could only take one with me.

ETA: I should have mentioned that build quality should play a part in your decision. Try and get something with metal construction if you can. Travelling can take its toll on equipment and anything weak will probably not last. Go for L lenses- they're built like tanks.

Hands down, go for the lights, you wont have to worry about damaging them on the trip when you leave them at home. They will be like new when you get back, of course you will need a new lense by then. LOL

Go for the lens.

With any luck, the OP will not be limited to taking only one lens.

L-series lenses are certainly strongly built, but there is not a 10mm lens (rectilinear or otherwise) in the L-series line up and the 10-22 gets great reviews everywhere it goes. Of course, if one doesn't want to go that wide, then it really isn't that much use. I've not been a great fan of WA in the past, although I'm having quite a bit of fun with it ATM, so, in an attempt to force my prejudices on others, I'd have to recommend going for the lens.

Anyway, as others have said, you can't travel easily with a set of studio lights, anyway.
