Would someone mind sharing with me as to why this image received 2 - 1's and 5 - 2's? I concider this to be one of my best photo's to date, and to see it with so many votes below 5 is just mind boggling to me.
10/29/2003 12:24:33 AM · #2
Mine, also my best todate, drew five 1's and eight 2's. I've come to expect this by now.

Just 2 - 1's and 5 - 2's is not bad considering some of the voting that I have seen. I think placing 34 out of 332 is a lot better indicator of what the viewers thought about the image. I voted an 8.

I give you 9 because of yellowish distracting background, but I have to tell you that you have 11 for the choice of the model :-)

Don't worry I got 6 ones and photo is meeting the challenge requirements 100%

I loved the photo, it had great colour, was nice and sharp, and said "Alone" well to me. I gave it an 8.

I honestly can't see how this could get 1's and 2's, as a 1 or a 2 basically is saying someone thinks the photo is awful.

When you look at the top 3, receiving one, three, and two "2's" respectively, you can see there will always be a few people who dislike your photo, regardless of how good it is. Your two 1's and 5 2's are actually a fairly low amount, on average.

I know it's all petty, but it just boggles my mind what a person thinks of when giving something a 1, or 2?

Rant Off...

The main reason I didn't give you a "10" the shot was the lower position on the foreground that brought the grass higher seem to confine the girl. Feels almost like a cropping really close.

Definitely undeserving of the 1's and 2's.

I was just discussing with my son your picture, crabappl. I just can't believe that so good pictures Like yours and some others too) got such a bad rating...

I was quite a distance from her, and zoomed in with my 70-300mm, this gives a flatter feel to the shot then if I was in closer. I was wanting a layering feel in the shot, and I actually liked the orange through the trees behind her. I felt it accented her hair.

Thanks everyone, for the time to express your feelings on the shot.

Watching the early voting on Grace, I just got a 2. My photos aren't the best, but I would challenge anyone to openly justify a 2 on this entry of mine .... naturally the person did not leave a comment.

Keep in mind that if you are scoring, say, a 6 or a 7 and someone gives you a 10, it only nudges you upward a little. However, someone giving you a 1 (often I feel to try and boost their own scores when a photo is otherwise doing very well) will have a far greater influence than the 10 as it is further from the average score for that photo.

Maybe a few of the model's ex-boyfriends are members of DPC.

I would very much want to know how you watch the early voting. Or it is just a feature for the members?

Members have an 'update stats' link in their 'My Home' page, so they can get up to the second stats.
By keeping an eye on the number of votes and the average score, you can work out what an individual vote was using simple maths.

Thank you for the answer. I want to become a member too but I am scared a bit. I am so amazed of the photography (as is so new in my life) that I am afraid to participate in more than one challenge per week. My husband will divorce me for not doing anything else but taking pictures. One can starve with a dishfull of pictures, even with some of the most beautiful ones.

I know what you mean, amazonea.. amazonia.. amazoneaa.. err, Elena. I'm a member (at the moment - runs out in a couple of days), and I too am staggered at the high quality of some of the photos we're up against. However, to use the old cliche, you've got to be in it to win it... and I can only get better (hmm, I HOPE I dont get any worse!).

I like the two challenges a week open to Members - if you dont like or cant think of an idea for one, there's always the other, but having two photos in action at any one time is fun.

I think you are right. I might not have to think so hard on only one challenge. Well I was going to do it anyway, just waiting to cool down a bit. :)

So the printings one can sail in a year is not enough to pay for the membership. I was imagining that's the situation. But I payed almost 2000 $ on camera, lenses, filters, tripod... I can pay another 25$ so I can at least use the darn things. :)
And yes, about some pictures we compete against... I wonder how can someone even dream to came close to their beauties....

Honestly, I don't know, I have asked myself that same question after every challeng I have entered. I guess it's just the way it goes.

As far as your shot goes, I gave it a 7.

I love the colors and you have a lovely model. It's s good shot. There are only 2 things that keep it from being great and one is related to the challenge topic.

First, The model is doing soemthing with her hands, but I can't tell what. Maybe if she was holding something or doing something else, it just is one of those picky things that bothers me.

The second is that for being alone, the viewer is presented with a fairly close view of her that contradicts "alone" This, for me is why I didn't give this an 8 or 9.

This is just my opinion. I hope it is of some value to you.

Probably some people who want theirs to win??? I hope and I think there's not so much of these people on this site.

By the way, at least a 8 for this picture to me.

The reason that people give 1's and 2's are many.

I have given this a bit of thought and here are some of the possible answers that could given by these goons:

"That same girl was in the Lighting challenge just a few days ago. He probably took that shot at the same time. Hmmpphh... lack of effort: 2`

or

"I'm feeling so $%/&?% angry cuz my %?$*& photo is doing worse than I thought. I'll show them: 1"

or

"THis photo sort of looks like mine. Gotta make sure I finish higher than this technically superior photographer: 1".

and I could go on and on.

Take them for what they are: goons. Deal with them how you like, but their pitiful attempts only deduct slightly from the overall score of your shot. So give your thoughts to more important stuff like "Should I wear boxer or briefs to work today?`"

LOL! Have a good one.

I became a member because I like the site and I wanted to support it, not because I thought I could compete with some of the photographers here. I could easily spend more than $25 on one photography book, but the interaction I find here is much more valuable.

This is a very good line, amazoneea. Once you're divorced, you'd be free to take up poetry, as well.

Well I just looked at the site favorites pictures and they have 1s and 2s... So the "not my picture" theory stays on the road (for a very small bunch of frustrated ones who did not catch the essence of dpc)
