I'm trying to come up with some human ways to describe an area of land, about 950 square miles. So far the best way I've been able to describe it is to say it's about the size of the state of Rhode Island.
Can any of you creative types think of any other ways I might 'metaphorically' describe the size of this land area?

The Nation's Yardstick ;)
Nothing to suggest, just thought I'd add to your dilemma. Hugs! |

You could simply say "equivalent to square area 31 miles on a side" or similar language. For me, that paints a picture I can get my mind around. |

95 Million times the size of the average living room?
Enough area to park 150 Billion cars?
6306 times the size of the Mall of America?
10 times the size of Okefenokee Swamp?

Hemet, CA has 950 square miles of illegal riding area used by motorists, dirt bikes and especially 4 wheelers.
The Great Salt Lake levels hit their historic low in 1963, when the surface stood at 4191 feet in elevation and covered 950 square miles.
Harrat Hutaymah is less than 2 million years old, making it one of the youngest volcanic fields in Saudi Arabia. It is also one of the most distant volcanic fields from the Red Sea. The volcanic deposits cover 350 square miles (900 square km) in an area scattered over 950 square miles (2,500 square km).
LOSSES WEST OF THE COASTAL RIDGE
As part of the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control Project, the East Coast Protective Levee was constructed at the eastern edge of the River of Grass. The barrier stopped water from flowing east from the River of Grass and allowed the area between the levee and the ridge to drain through canals cut to the ocean. No longer subject to periodic flooding, the area became suitable for agriculture and later for urban development. It is now almost entirely urban. About 160 square miles of this severed area was Everglades marsh. With the construction, an additional tributary watershed of about 775 square miles was severed from the Everglades. Including lost marsh, almost 950 square miles of watershed were lost.
Delaware ranks 49th in the nation with a total area of 1,982 square miles. New Castle County is 438 square miles. Kent County is 594 square miles. Sussex County is 950 square miles. Delaware is 96 miles long and varies from 9 to 35 miles in width.
...group of islands which the Greeks once supposed entirely to surround Delos -- the Cyclades. The islands, twelve in number and covering an area of about 950 square miles, are not only rarely visited by tourists but seem to have been almost ignored by archaeologists.
It said that 27.3 percent of China's territory was desert, a mass that was
increasing each year by 2,460 square km (950 square miles), or the size of an
average county.
Any of this info give you ideas?

I'd tell them to imagine 475 square miles and then double it.

Do you want it to sound really big or really small? It's equivalent to 6 billion **** or 1/4 of ****.

Hmmm... that would be about 20.21276595744680851063829787234 times the size of Disneyworld, give or take a little. :O)

According to The Register the new standard unit for area is the nanoWales. I'll leave you to do the maths.

Figure out how long a highway drive would take in both directions (or around the perimeter)... like x hours of highway driving around.... people would relate to that a little better as large scale is meaningless. |

Did you know that if you started at the eastern end of Rhode Island, and began positioning Big Mac cheeseburgers end-to-end... by the time you'd get to the western end of Rhode Island, your hands would be very greasy?

Ah cool, thanks. Also depends on the shape, though
I'm trying to make it sound big. :-)

Multiplier of football fields is always a good one, but not very original. It's about the size of Luxembourg. 46 times this size of Bermuda. Over 5500 time larger than the Vatican.

It's enough land to put a microwave oven on, and still have plenty of house to build left over.
