Is this camera superior to the popluar Canon DSLR's,
Has anyone tried it out? what do you think, is it worth the $1,749

That is the 5MP cam right? I haven't really looked at it. One good way of comparison is dpreview, and doing a camera comparison. If you select 2 or more cameras, you can compare them side by side.

Looks like an interesting camera...

I think it may be tough for that camera to catch on. I don't believe it uses standard lenses... I don't normally follow Olympus but I may follow this one...

my opinion: it costs waaay too much for what you get.

there's no really compelling reason to shell out extra for this camera over the other major DSLR offerings, unless you are some die-hard Olympus fan.

Canon 10D sensor is better than Olympus E1,it is CMOS and have 18000 Photodiodes per square mm compare to 23000 photodiodes per square mm in Olympus, smaller diodes mean more noise generated and lower image quality!

It is a bit pricey. Very very different sensor. I think the comments about the image quality might be arguable. The olympus people brought one around and everyone loved the way it handled, but again, a bit pricey.

I thought you people in N America should have it now?

I went to my local camera store, and tried it out, it felt somewhat lighter than the Canon 10D. I think its extremly pricey and that's what will definatly keep everyone buying Canon's. Unless this camera has major improvements over the rest of the DSLRs. I plan on renting one as soon as its availabe for rental and shoot under normal and extreme conditions, and see what type of quality this thing produces.

Have you tried the E-1 yet, drsdnblues?

It is pricey, because this is Oly's answer to the Nikon D1x and Canon's 1D, a downscaled version to compete with the 10D will be available sometime in 2004.
In the mean time Canon is (according to Paul Pope at the Canon 1D/1Ds forum at dpreview -pretty reliable, claims to have handled it) going to introduce the 1D succesor at the 2004 PMA. That thing will kill the E1 and the D2h.

But what will this mean to the 10D succesor (would be cool to have the 1D speed, viewfinder and focussing technology)? It seems like Canon is a step ahead of the competition every time.
Nikon has not even hinted that there will be a 300D, nor a 1Ds equivalent from their side. Pentax is still stuck with 2 years old Sony technology and Olympus is trying to force a new digital system (4/3) onto the market that might be obsolete in a few months whereas their consumer cam is still to be introduced and might directly be overshadowed by the 10D replacement.

When it comes to the price for the E1, remember that it is a watersealed and dustproof body. The 10D is not. So if you like to do nature and landscapes in remote and difficult locations and have yet to buy into a lens system but cannot afford the 1D or D1x, this might be the camera for you.

Where is it possible to rent cameras and about how much does it cost? I have been wanting to do this next time I buy a camera, but have no idea of where to look to find such a place. I live in the Philadelphia area and about 90 miles from New York.

There are lots of places to rent, but it's really not too price effective, for example, Calumet in NYC has digital equipment for rent, A Nikon D100 goes for $150/day, $450/week. They did not have a Oly E-1, but you can call them as I'm sure they usually expand their rental inventory all the time. Dunno if those prices include any lenses, but I would assume that those are separate and cost additional $$. Usually, you need to post a deposit equal to the replacement cost. I used to rent lenses in Hollywood for my photo shoots, but I always figured that cost into my billing.

Spazmo-thanks for the info. I will check into it soon. I really don't like my Canon10D. I think I got a lemon. Already had to have one replaced and I think this one came from the same batch.

yikes! what is wrong?

I didn't mention it in my first post, but, you might try to find a place that sells AND rents, maybe you can negotiate a lower rate IF you seemed serious about buying from them, or maybe they would refund your rental (or at least part of it)if you purchased from them.

Personally, if I were buying a DSLR today, I would probably go with the D100, then later, pick up a N80, which is basically the film version of the same camera.

Not necessarily. I doubt that 1D successor will cost under $3000. A digital EOS-3, however....

True. Important for me. I think of the E-1 as poor man's 1Ds. :)
I am 90% sure that I will get the E-1.
