Hey all, I have to confess something.
After many vows that I would not darken the doorstop of another hospital for many years to come. I visited the ER yesterday afternoon.
The blood drive came to work, I participated (as I have many times) but this time I got very weak and added a headache and an upset tummy too. I fought the feeling for about 3 1/2 hours with lots of down on the floor and all kinds of other antics prescribed by Red Cross. Finally made the trip to the hospital. Luckily today I'm about 90%, they warned that I'd feel lousy for about 3 days.
YIKES.
I think I'll skip the next blood drive, but try it again the time after that.
Oh yeah ... there were about 5-6 of us that got sick...we all had the same person remove our needle, think there is a coincidence?

Edit to add: Jeffrey, you must have had a REAL craving for that cake!

WHAT?! 5-6 of you got sick...common factor is your workplace and same person removed your needle...I'd sure think there was some connection between either/or/both. Someone sic Dr Gregory House on'em!

Oh yeah I have an entry for Negative Images.

And the sap has stopped flowing. My two humble sugar maples gave me 6 gallons of sap over a 10-day period. Just for fun, I'm boiling down the last litre of sap on the woodpellet stove just so I can have a teeny little smear of fresh syrup (I hope) in the morning on my pancakes!

Wait til next year when I tap all 10 trees!!!!

Hay, Did just get called a trout??
Ah-well, I̢۪m headed south this morning towards real beer, and fast cars, (Utah beer has lower % alcohol). NHRA in Vegas, with the wife to drive me home after, could life get better. : )

Turns out the non-business end of a toothbrush makes a decent cake-shoveling tool.

But even I couldn't use the brush end. That would just be wrong. Plus I'd never be able to suck all the frosting out from between the bristles.

My hero :) I think you should have taken a self-portrait, and sent it to your dentist framed :p

I have nothing in the challenges this week, and I'm suffering from update withdrawal. I'll feel better next week. I have already entered Water and Negative. I love my water shot, and so does my husband. Both are a very bad indicator for the score.

Reminds me of an old joke. Know the similarity between Coors Light and sex in a canoe?

I think I need a pep talk, the one I am getting from hubby is not working.

Back in early March I received my tax refund and immediately bought the 40D. Before I even had time to take it out of the box, my daughter was in her horrible car accident in NY. I sold my old 10D and had the money to send Paulina to upstate NY to be with her sister, but because of my huge purchase, did not have the money to go myself. It was because of the goodness of the people on DPC, enough money was raised to send me to NY.

I have these feelings, not sure if they are bitter or guilty, toward my new camera. I have owned it for over a month and have taken less than 100 photos with it. I have the cutest kittens in the world that I am not photographing. I have no interest in the challenges, and am barely participating in the side challenges I signed up for.

I understand how irrational it is to feel guilt because of this camera purchase, but damn it, I DO. I do not enjoy using it and just want my old dependable 10D back.

Barbara: screw rationality. Sell it and buy another 10D. Or buy a cheap point-and-shoot and put the 40D away for 6 months and then see how you feel. No one's life hangs in the balance, no major morals are in play, etc. Just do what makes you feel good.

And Susan: right! :)

Barbara, your purchase of the 40D and your daughter's accident are completely, utterly, and cosmicly (is that even a word?) unrelated. The guilt you have isn't the camera itself - it's that you feel guilty that you want to get on with your life - you want things back the way they were before. In that respect, the 40D is actually a good thing. The way things were before were with your comfortable 10D. The 40D is a new challenge. It's a remotely connected and odd way for you to parallel your daughter's recovery, sort of. You need to buckle down and learn the new camera. Get familiar with it. Take pictures of the kittens (please!) and at the same time, your daughter is trying to rebuild her life, learn new things. In a way, you can share those things that please you (your views of the west, in particular) with your daughter across the miles. Decide to send her a picture a day, or a picture a week. Have her tell you things she'd like to see pictures of, then go get them for her.

Barbara, I understand your feelings. I bought my 300D just before I went into hospital, when I came out I didn't touch the camera much for 2 months and couldn't get rid of feelings of guilt. In the end, I had to make myself grab the camera and start taking photos again. It still took another 6 months to finally get the interest back to near normal.

Take your time, don't sell the 40D. Give yourself some home challenges to get the urge back:) Best of luck:)

This is about the best advice to help motivate you as I can imagine. I hope Deb's effort helps you!

The way I see it, the guilt you feel is about yourself - you bought a luxury item with your money, and then didn't have the money when you really needed it for something unexpected and unbearably important. You're mad at yourself about that, I suspect. Any enthusiasm you might summon up about the camera now reminds you of the impulse that led you to buy it to begin with.

Would things have been better if you had saved the refund instead? - undoubtedly, hindsight being 20/20 and all that. Are you a monster for having treated yourself to something? - I can't agree with that. As Deb said, the two events of purchase and accident are coincidental, but cosmically unrelated. Please forgive yourself and learn to love that camera.

My two cents - apologies if I got too personal with the attempt at psychoanalysis. Take Deb's advice, make something that will make your daughter smile. I wish you the best.

Suffice to say you would not have bought the new camera if you knew what the future held. But since you ARE human and didn't know what waited on the sidelines you really do need to cut yourself a break, Barb.
You are a great mother, that much is evident. Perhaps it isn't guilt but just a lack of motivation because your emotions have been thru hell and back. Give yourself some time, grab enjoyment where you can. The photo bug will be waiting for you when you decide you are ready.
PS: Let me know when you think the right time for me to focus on the quilt is, OK?

Barbara, you have a lot of varying opinions and advice here. All of it seems good, but only you will know which feels right when you hear it. So I will add my two cents worth.

After my mother died, I had no interest in doing any of the things that used to give me pleasure. I carried on with work and my other responsibilities, but when it came to relaxation and free time, I just stared at the TV. I realized that I was in a mild depression -- able to function but without any motivation. I wondered if that would be a permanent condition. It lasted quite a long time, but one day when I was on vacation, I saw a crewel needlework kit in a store window. I was surprised to realized that I wanted to buy it and work on it. That signaled the end of the depression and my interest in life began to return.

It seems to me that you may be in a similar situation, and you are not feeling guilty about having bought the 40D, but are feeling guilty about not wanting to use it. Give it time. Get rest. And give yourself a chance to grieve for your daughter's and your loss. Joy will return to your life at some unexpected moment.

Barbara, what you're going through is perfectly understandable. I can't really say anything new, but just go with the flow...if you feel like selling the camera and buying something else, do so...don't force yourself to take pictures just for the sake of doing so, but because you really want to. Nobody could have foreseen what happened in your life, you mustn't beat yourself up.

Er, Barbara, it's just a thing, right? Not such an unreasonable thing to talk about what with this being a photography site, but even so.

You didn't do anything wrong. (Of course, I could be wrong about that, but from what I can tell, you did not do anything wrong).

I do recall that when I got the D200, I felt something like I'd enrolled as a space pilot without any previous flying experience. Results were a while coming.

Whatever you do to make yourself feel better - be it selling something, buying something, going to a shrink etc, etc, - it's a good thing. It's a good thing because it makes you feel better, because it makes you feel you're doing something about feeling better and, most of all, because your family needs you to feel better.

If only it were that simple :-) Not much use listening to me, because I've been depressed for ages. Lots of bad stuff happened, but you didn't do anything wrong.
