You should post links or thumbs...kind of large for the forums.

(I thought it was a lot easier to view the files right here in the forum, but DPC prefers links/thumbnails)

Your Flickr account has lots of good work, especially those done outdoors - which is why this work may not be as good (no offense). While most of the outdoor shots seem to have a relatively large DOF, these are much more shallow. In the first image, the focus seems to be on her shoulder; its generally considered 'better' to focus on the eyes OR a specific body part (legs, back, chest, etc.) Yes, I realize the shoulder is a body part LOL... this just looks as though it was an accident instead of intentional. Also, your outdoor shots are well-lit, but these two seem underexposed & somewhat flat. Since there is no strong placement of either lighting or focus, we are left wandering around the image.

You have an interesting subject and BG, and would improve greatly with only minor changes. Good luck, and I enjoyed looking @ your portfolio. :D

Billy

eta - sorry, but I just noticed the green color cast (which could explain why there is no 'pop' to the pink BG.) Maybe a shift in color temperature; was there florescent lighting nearby? Hope this is helpful! :)

Finally, congratulations on your first post here on DPC!

Sorry for the large pics.

rossbilly - thanks for the critique. It was all lit by florescent lighting. My next purchase will be some sort of flash. We were experimenting with my shop lights =/ I realize I need better lights to make it pop more. I just used what i had. The focus and composition is something that I can work on though. On this photo I focused on the eyes. It makes me wonder if my lens is having focusing issues. I must have just moved slightly. Thanks agian it was helpful :)

First image ... I think I'd really like to connect with her somehow. She's looking away, and that can work, but in this case, she simply feels "disconnected". As is, it feels more like you were spying on her... saw her sitting there and took a shot without her knowledge. She didn't look at you, and you didn't even focus on her eyes, just her shoulder.

The second image is much more in line with what I am thinking. I feel it's a stronger image due to the connection with the viewer. I like the shallow DOF with her legs and feet falling out of focus. However, the pose feels a little stiff. I wonder if it wouldn't feel a bit more natural if she leaned back, possibly even tilting her head back instead of forward as it is now. Maybe show just a bit of her right should as well.

Thanks dwterry. Next time I shoot I will use your advise with the pose :) She is a little uncomfortable when we shoot, although she is getting better about it.

Hey I'm sorry if you didn't want anyone to do this but I wanted to practice some editing and didn't have a picture and you were looking for some help so I did an edit.

If there was more light on the face I wouldn't have had to do that much to it but just for the record I'm not happy with the editing on the face at all.

Before & After

I hope you don't mind an edit...I thought I'd try to add some softness to her as well as brighten up her face and lessen the dark circles under her eyes. I think this is roughly what I did:

Auto Contrast
USM
Duplicate layer
Virtual Photographer Radiance Filter
Decreased opacity to about 25%
Flattened layers
Used paintbrush to paint over dark circles with a color selected from her cheek
Duplicated Layer
Reduced noise significantly
erased head/face and shirt detail
flattened layers
curves adjustment
diffuse glow filter

Sounds like a lot but only took about 5 minutes. I'll remove the image from my workshop after you've had a chance to check it out.

Looks good. It has more pop to it for sure! Thanks for the effort.
