Hi Justin,
It looks like this title may actually violate eBay's policy on Misleading Titles.
The policy states simply, Sellers are not permitted to create titles for their listings that do not accurately describe the item for sale.
In the examples section, one example provided is, If a seller lists an auction simply as âApple iPodâ, the seller must be selling an actual Apple iPod â not accessories to an Apple iPod â or items related to or unrelated to an Apple iPod.
I would recommend including "rental discount coupon" or similar language in your title.

How do you figure this was built to trick people? If that were the case, I would have 100 of them up right now pulling in $36 a piece and then I would be gone, I wouldn't have my coupon click to my rental site, I wouldn't write in huge black letters above the coupon that it is for a coupon and not a purchase, I wouldn't send people emails after they bid saying its a coupon for a rental and not a purchase.
There is a reason that over 300 people looked at the auction and only a handful bid, they read the description found out it wasn't for a purchase and moved on, thats what you are supposed to do on ebay. Most of the bids were legit too, all around $1-$10. It was only until some fool bid $36 that it scewed everything up.
If you feel the TITLE was mileading, fine. We changed it for the second batch of coupons. But to say it was malicious intent is crazy. ANyone who has been on DPC since Oct has seen me post updates and discounts for rentals.

The second title looks find. You may want to state that the coupon is worth up to $xx, or give a range, something like:
Our two-week rental prices range from $xx on a Canon xxx "L" lens to $xxx on a Canon xxx "L" lens. |

We thought about doing that, but we decided it was better to get them to the site to see the inventory and pricing before they bid. They can always go back to ebay. Who knows, maybe they would get so overwhelmed by seeing so many L lenses for so cheap they would just rent away!
If you give range of savings to someone, they tend to always assume they are getting the high end of the range regardless of what they order. Our prices differ...for example, the 85 1.8 is only $20ish/week while the 85 1.2L is closer to $60.
this was more of an advertising plan than anything else. Even if they don't sell, usually about 150 people look at them and possibly visit the site. From an advertising expense point of view, thats 150 sets of eyeballs for about $.40. Not bad. |

On a related note, I just picked up a copy of "Digital photographer" at lunch and noticed your ad in it. The majority of the ad looks a little soft and fuzzy, as if it were a tear sheet that had been copied. The images of the lenses look decent, but the photo of the model looks posterized, grainy, and not a lot of detail in her or especially the camera she is holding. The text headings and footer look kind of soft as well. I apologize if I've insulted your own work, but for what such ads cost, I figure you would prefer to get the feedback. |

the click through works fine on my end, I think it may be your browser.
As for the ad in DP. It printed soft, the pdf we submitted was much sharper and they are aware of that. I was pretty unimpressed with their preprint work. I work in advertising and we call it toning when we get stuff ready to print in our publications. The toning on this was terrible. It also looks as if they slightly resized the ad which annoys me too because I asked for specific dimensions including bleed. The resize could be the cause of the softness as well.
Tough to say. All in all I was mostly pleased with the ad. If it was an ad for photography and my images looked that soft I would have been seriously pissed off. Being an ad for our rental business, I think that for the general public the softness was a non issue, our text was clear, the URL was clear and the lens images were pretty good. Even if people noticed the softness, I don't think it would have a negative effect on generating business... I may not be able to create a tack sharp ad, but I do have L series lenses for rent (Nikon stuff too).
I do appreciate the feedback. |
