Earthrise

R.

That's weird, the link changed itself from the image to its title, so I gave a link to the full URL...

... and permission is denied... so it goes...

Try this one:

by Eddie Adams

The Naplam Girl shot was by Nick Út, also a powerful shot.

I think one of the shots that conveyed the true choas of D-day, one that I think of often. Photo by Robert Capa

and this one, pure joy celebration

by Alfred Eisenstaedt.

These are just a few that popped into my head, there are many more.

Jeez Bear. Give people a chance to think about it. LOL.

That being said, he certainly should have tried to do some noise reduction. I mean, really, look at that thing. Not to mention the overexposure on the roof. Nice use of the rule of thirds though.

(Side note, the exposure time was 8 hours for the image)

Isn't that the worlds first photo? Do I get extra points for naming the photographer? Joseph Nicephore Niepce

Do I get bonus points for knowing where it is ? Harry Ransom Center, Austin, Tx.

Looks quite a bit darker than this now.

You would have had 543,679 bonus points had you used the proper accents (Joseph Nicéphore Niépce) or identified the title of the photo (View from the Window at Le Gras), but alas, I shall only award 35,856 bonus points for the unaccented name.

Oh, btw, point are not redeemable for cash or prizes.

Niepce's photo of the neighbourhood.

Photograph of a bullet in supersonic flight, published by Ernst Mach in 1887.

Roentgen's first x-ray.

...

Marylin Monroe's image where she's naked on the bed with red sheets didn't change the world, but it did change me. You know which photo I'm talking about.

Well, war induces a change the world, and an image that I believe caused that is that of the Racak's massacre.

Here's a link to the video of that event if you care to relive it. An inspiring moment from an otherwise bleak chapter.

this monk burned himself alive to protest a war. The buggy in the background is his and is still there to this day as a monument to him. This is one of the most intense and memorable images in the world hands down. I forget the name of the photographer and the war if some one cares to add that information it would be much appreciated, I think it may have to do with Chinas rule over Tibet or the Vietnam war.

Malcolm Browne is the photographer and it's a great photo, that also puts a knot in my stomach.
eta: the monk was protesting the persecution of Bhuddhists by South Vietnams Ngo Dinh Diem administration. It was in 1963. (Sorry about the accents again, button still broken)

Anyone notice a trend with all the black and whites? Is it just that nothing really shocks us anymore, so all the photos are pre-colour? Or is it that black and white conveys more emotion? Or is it that in newspapers photographs were published in B&W so that is how we've come to remember them over time?

All of the images above are excellent examples.

As a collection, the set of images of the Holocaust is another. Survivors, burial pits, stacks of clothing, etc.

Those images proved the Holocaust happened and just how brutal the Nazis were. One result was the creation of Israel.

Here's just the first one I found. Not for the squeamish.
