Great, now I've got that scene from I'm Gonna Get You Sucka stuck in my head. "My eyes aren't really green.."

I don't know if it's been mentioned here before, but if anyone is looking for a good book to read, pick up "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. Just don't be reading the last bit of it in a public place. It is excellent.

If anyone's looking for another good book to read, pick up "Fictions" by Borges, some of the best short stories I've ever read.

Oh, and sorry I've been MIA, I appear to have found myself chained to a lab bench for many hours a day with no Internet access. This state of affairs may continue for some time, but every once in a while I'll reappear. (though maybe looking a bit disheveled and confused by daylight)

A popular book - all hard copies at a couple libraries are checked out - I found a digital copy that can be borrowed through downloading from the public library.

Sorry I haven't been able to spend much time taking photos, submitting..and commenting on everyones stuff. Life has thrown me a few curve balls lately. Hopefully...things will smooth out and I will be able to become more involved again.
Eve
PS..if you want/need to drop me from the team..I will understand.

I am in for the monthly free for all.... it is a "score whore" but it is beautiful! (and damn it, I like it)

I love love love my free study and I don't give a damn what score it gets. I only hope some people get a kick out of it.

Hey guess what? One of my suggestions has come to fruition! It took a while but here it is!

I agree, but I'm plenty happy with this for a starting score:

I'm going to take a leaf out of Deb's book and tun my scores off - I really, really wanted my Free Study entry on my home page, but at 5.9 it ain't going to be. It's one of those rare photos that I got excited about from the moment I pressed the shutter - in fact from the moment I started preparing for it a good hour before I pressed the shutter. Bum.

Well, my Free Study entry is getting spanked but good.

May actually be the notivation I need to quit dicking around here, get a life, and move on.

The last couple entries I've had have been perfectly good images that just pretty much fell flat, yet have been pretty good indications that my work is maturing and really proving to myself that I can capture life the way I want.

I am really happy with my FS entry, it's sitting at 4.4, and it has dawned on me that I don't need this shit at all.

There's been a real shift in the general tone at DPC it seems to me, and the decency and pleasant demeanor that I loved seems to have disappeared. Now all I hear is carping, whining, and negativity.......and that's not what I need or want from someplace I go for enjoyment.

I dunno.......my membership's paid up, so I'll probably check in here and there, and I'm going to the Eastern State GTG 'cause I love the GTGs, but I'm thinking I'm about done with challenges.

Sorry to hear that Jeb. :(
Perhaps you just need a temporary break from this non-reality?

My membership is due later this month. Not only am I undecided if I want to renew, but since I am unemployed right now I have other things I could use the money on. So I have a decision to make later this month as well.

I'm not sure this is necessarily a bad thing.

The side challenges are where I learn and grow, the regular challenges just don't seem to add anything to my photography.

I got a comment today on my Patterns entry that was pretty off the mark.......from someone whose best score to date was a 5.2.

WTF? This is the same entry where I got two awesome TS comments and one from karmat.

I really try not to let stupid things like that bother me, but I still just want to send an indignant PM.......for all the good that would do.

If I don't enter challenges, I don't have to endure stupid, clueless comments from people I have no respect for or really feel that their opinion matters.

Yet it still obviously bothered me.

C'est la vie....

I can very much relate, Jeb. I've been having a hard time with challenge entries lately, too. And I get a bit irritated when I read some comments that really are neither here nor there at first to me, but as I think about them, they do reveal some things.

1. I don't please everybody. Not even most people, in some cases. But I do please a few. That's good!
2. There are people here who are approaching this (photography, challenges) from very different experience levels. Go back and look at what you liked (and didn't like) when you first started. I'm betting it's changed a bit since then. It will with some of the newbies here now, too. If we continue to submit things we like that are decent, newbies will have the opportunity to see them more than once, and will eventually begin to "see" things differently. If those of us who are outside the mainstream all call it quits, they'll get the very poor and the very good, and not much of the in-between or out of the box stuff to see and learn and grow from. At least this is my current rationale for continued participation. :-)
3. Side challenges are good - a different kind of learning experience. One must keep one's portfolio to participate effectively in side challenges. It's more fair to the others to be able to view and comment on your shots here than somewhere else. This alone is a good reason to keep the membership, even if you quit entering challenges.

Oh, and I am sure the fact that it is April Fools day has nothing to do with this at all... will it be another challenge that disappears?

Anyone else getting DNMC 1 comments from a baghead on the free study? Tsk, done already last year, not original :p

Yes I got that as well, and they actually left me a nice score, not a 1.

Got the comment, but I think I got a 5 with mine. Or somewhere thereabouts - possibly a 4.

Yes. Some people just never grow up, do they?

Yep! My Patterns entry is a good example of that. Having gone back to bed and having my FS at least over 5.0 helps a little.

I was definitely irritated about that 4.4........seeing as how this is once again destined to be a Free Study that I won't break 6.0 on, I may just bag the Free Stduy thing since I've NEVER broken 6.0.

Oh, I don't necessarily care whether or not I reach people.....I know I'm not going to do that, but I have a hard time swallowing a comment explaining someone's concept of a technical error on my part when they have a high score of a 5.2 on their profile page, and to me their comment is just plain wrong......IMO, of course.

Having participated in some of the forum threads where people explain how they vote & comment the way they do, I understand why some people do what they do, but also IMO, their thinking is very flawed. n one of the recent threads, one guy admitted never giving a score above a 6 and that he had also given out something like 1500 1s, 2s, and 3s in the first six months that he was here.

Sorry, but in my book, that's just damaged thinking.

Yeah.....and the learning curve is excellent. The accountability factor and the inclination to be more careful and considerate in your commenting seems to be very much in evidence in the side challenges. You get to know the people you're participating with, and you learn how and why they critique your images. One thing that I like about it is that often, you can do a better job on your own images just by seeing what someone else is doing at the same time.

I dunno......maybe I'm growing up some.......8>)

Stop that now!

I've got three challenges up and running and they're all under 4. Oh, me...
