My theory. *Ahem*

It seems that early voting was very low, then it ping ponged. In some of the comments I have received over the last few challenges, I have noticed comments from what may be a higher than normal number of new members. (DPC may be getting some more exposure from somewhere lately) I think these new members are voting early and heavily. They may be voting quickly, using a scale of like<-->don't like rather than a scale ofgood <--> bad as many of us do. This may explain large amounts of low votes and wide swings on images that are actually pretty good. Many of us will give good votes to entries that do not have personal appeal, because they really are good and we recognize that. These folks are not doing that. These new members are simply looking at the pictures and voting, many of them not actually participating in the challenges or the forums. (31 new people joined Thursday, 17 on Friday)

I think part of the voting trend is that the early, heavy voters get their votes in the first day, and those of us that give the entries more consideration take longer to get around to voting a particular challenge. When we do, we vote on less, simply because it takes more time. My patterns entry is now getting mostly votes in the range I expected to see, but at this point I will probably not exceed a low to mid 5. I try to use the comments from people with reputations I know as a guide to how it is really doing. So far I have heard from 2, and both were positive. Perhaps large challenges have lower average votes, because the people who vote quickly can easily vote the whole thing, while others that give the entries more consideration have trouble finding the time to get to them all.

An interesting thing happened. The first two comments I received on my patterns entry were nearly identical and placed five minutes apart. When I looked at the user profiles, they both had the same camera, registered the same day and had usernames with a trend to them. I thought it was the same person with 2 accounts. Seems they are participating as a group, probably a class. I can appreciate DPC being used as a learning tool for a photography class, though I would like it better if they left their own thoughts instead of parroting a classmate's critique. I had messaged one of them (thinking both were one person) and he responded. I told him that some of my alternatives that I did not enter had more of the trait he suggested my photo needed and I would appreciate some feedback if he could have a look in the outtakes thread after the challenge.

That's my theory(s). It may be total bunk, but it was just some thoughts on what could be happening with the voting.

My scoring pattern has been almost opposite.

yospiff -- The only part of your theory that I can check quickly, as I'm in a hurry, is the amount of people joining. I would venture to say it is actually very similar, or perhaps even a touch down from times past. On March 28, 2007, there were 40 people who joined, and on March 29, 2007 there were 41.

The other part about voting fluctuation I don't have time to "research" right now, but I think if you do a forum search and go back to about 2002 or 2003, you will see the same complaint. I can honestly say, that with a handful of exceptions, my scores have followed about the same pattern for 6 years.

But, maybe it is just me.

That's as good a theory as any I suppose. Seems as thought you did give it a bit of thought.

My experience so far (granted it's only 3 challenges so not really enough time to achieve any kind of real pattern) is that voting starts out high (relatively speaking that is) and then sinks lower and lower. This one has been different for me in the fact that it has basically stayed the same with very little fluctuation at all. I think maybe it screams middle of the road. It's like people can't decide if it is a 5 or 6 and statistically it is evening out on which was chosen. I get the feeling it will be a very narrow voting curve with very few if any high scores and very few if any low scores. I'll be very interested to see just what the voting curve does look like at the end.

It depends, the whole starting out low or high - lately I've been starting out a lot of challenges with votes average 4-something. By the end of the challenge it has slowly crept to a low 5-something. Most of the time. If you have a REALLY good shot, it may start out sky high and slowly drop during the week, but I can't verify that through experience. :-)

After about 10 votes it leveled out at 5.4444 and has stayed there ever since.

Thanks for the input. It supports my sub-theory that my main theory is bunk. Perhaps this is another on of those where I think my entry is better than it really is. Looking forward to seeing where it places after rollover.

Perhaps my theory is partially correct, as far as the reasons for the upward and downward trends during voting, and it has just been like that over the last 6 years.

My high scoring shots (6.6 to 7.5 for me) usually start very high - then fall all week, while my low scoring shots (5.2 to 6.0 for me) start low then rise. The shots in between seem to never have a scoring pattern.

my scores pattern just seems to be a flat line with the random blip here or there.

Come over to the dark side - try one that starts at a 4.7.... it's fun! Really! :)

Just my .02 CDN worth...

Here's how I vote...if a pic barely meets the challenge requirements, it gets a 4 or in very rare cases, a 3. If it's basically a good picture, but not much else, 5, otherwise 6. If it resounds with me in a strongly in emotional or technical way I vote 7+, and any vote 7 or over is told to the photog. Sometimes I mention that I gave a 6, meaning it was close to being a 7 but not quite.

I try to vote/comment on the pix as they are, on their own merits, not in relation to each other. Just try facing that dreaded question, posed to me once by the elder of my two nieces who are full sisters: 'Aunty Susan, who's prettier, me or Ciara?' On whose standards do you answer, society's or yours? (For the record I told Jessica that they were both pretty, though by contemporary Westrern standards, Jessica would be considered the lesser of the two. But, having been the ugly duckling whilst my younger sister, mother to my nieces, was the little princess, I appreciate Jessica's maturity, and told her so.)

I feel that it is second-guessing and stifling your own judgement to, say, give a shot a 6 then come back to it later, having seen others of its ilk, and altering the score in relation to how it fares against those other pix. I feel this does a grave disservice to the photog and the voter, ultimately.

So in fact I am quite glad that this time around the number of views doesn't rival the number of votes cast. That is the way I was introduced to voting, and that is how I think it should be done.

Well I am done voting (except for some of my DPC olympic teammate's images)
Stats: You have rated 287 of 290 images (99%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 100 images (34%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.5923.

There were some brilliant shots & a lot of good shots IMO.

I'll throw my thanks in here too. I like getting the comments even (maybe even especially) if they are negative. You liked my pic but maybe just not for the challenge and I think I agree with you. I wasn't particularly satisfied with the picture either.

On another note I wanted to apologize to you SandyP. I guess I tend to get a little excitable and shouldn't have responded in the way I did. It was decidedly not friendly.

Thank you for the comment on my pic snaffles (this is an edit from my original thank you comment because I got you confused with another commenter who liked the pic but just not for this challenge (tootsweet I thank you also).

Aww shucks everyone, very nice of y'all...but in all honesty I've just learned from plain ol experience the kind of comments I like to get, and that I can actually learn how to take better pictures from. Negative comments are good for only one thing - NOTHING!!!

Besides, we all have karma to contend with...what goes around, comes around...the more traditional Biblical version is 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you'...so everyone, whatever your beliefs or voting patterns, please please please keep that basic tenet in mind!

Ok going back to bed now...sweet dreams all...*zzz*

My score started at 7, dropped down to 6 over the first 24 hours... hovered just about 6 for a few day and then when I got online to check today... OMG!!! 6.3. Just hope the voters for the rest of the week are a generous as the voters have been over the weekend.

I had a brief glorious moment where my score hit 5.3!!! Sadly, it didn't last. Maybe with the scrubber.... :-)
