Does anyone know if here is a Nikon 50mm prime lens available that will autofocus on a D40?
I've never used a lens like this so don't know if not autofocusing is a problem..? |

Not at the moment.
The upcoming Sigma 50mm f1.4 will once it's released.

Except for action shots, manual focus isn't a problem with fast primes. Their narrow depth of focus (wide open) assists focusing, as does the bright image, about 5x-10x brighter than your kit zoom lens.

I got the Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8 D, it's not autofocus, but it is pretty amazing!
I am finding it hard to manually focus it on a moving child though! Any tips? |

It's one hell of a lens for the money!
I guess you'll either have to pre-focus on where they are going to be (depending on how predictable they are) or take the easier option of giving them an ice lolly or something haha ;) |

I think I've reverted to shooting continuous! But it's so fast indoors it's great! |
