Hi,
I am new here and I was just wondering why it seems like everyone uses the Canon EOS. Is this the best camera for digital photos? If so why? I have a Panasonic LumixDMC-TZ3 is that good for a beginner? Thanks. |

I love my XTi. It has all the right features to take great shots but it has modes that are simple enough for anyone. |

Does the camera you are using have all the features you currently want in a camera? Is so, then the camera is right for you.
Just because a large number of us use Canon EOS cameras does not mean it is the right camera for everyone. There are a large number of users of other brands of cameras at all levels.
Welcome to DPC. |

Welcome Aleema!
You have no idea what you've just unleashed. We have a bit of a friendly Canon/Nikon rivalry going here. We Canon owners patiently try to teach the Nikon owners the errors of their ways, and of course the Nikonians lash back out of sheer jealousy! ;-)
In all seriousness, your Panasonic is a perfectly fine camera, and as long as it meets your needs there is no reason to upgrade. As you explore your interests, if you then start to find that you are truly being limited by the capabilities of your camera, that is a good sign that you need to consider an upgrade. At that point, though, you will have a good idea of what features are most important to you given your interests, and can make your own decision accordingly.

Wellllllll. . . . that's kind of a pandora's box kind of question with die-hard loyal Canon and Nikon lovers certain they know best why their camera of choice is the only way to go. When I was deciding on a camera, we did alot of research, then talked with the guy at our camera store, who happened to be a NIKON guy. He admitted that Nikon has in fact gotten to where they can do anything Canon can do, they just haven't figured out how to do it as affordably as Canon. So you end up getting equally as good a camera, but will probably pay more for the same perks. So I went with a Canon, and I have certainly not been disappointed. I don't know if since then Nikon has figured out how to do it as affordably as Canon, but I don't really think you can go wrong with either. And I know nothing about other kinds of cameras.
Welcome to dp, Sharrice! And good luck when you start baring your soul to the wolves in challenges :)

your camera is fine to start out with, though as you grow in photography you'll find that you may want to consider moving up in Camera |

Canon and Nikon are okay, but Pentex schools them all on a regular baises. *sarcasm*
no but really, taking a picture is 99% the photographer and 1% the camera, click on the different cameras to see the photos that have been taken with them, and youll find some amazing captures with pentex, nikon or canon.

Actually the fences 2 challenge had a second place point and shoot winner! But club jungle is of course right upgrade when you outgrow your camera. Grabbing a mark II is not going to make you a better photographer. |

We let them Nikon and Canon users duke it out while the rest of us sit quietly in the background. |

gordon posted an "essay" type thing from another site a week or so ago that dealt with "Is it the photographer or the equipment." In that thread, I mentioned that I was going to bookmark it and post it whenever someone stated it was either the camera or the one behind the camera.
Of course, now I can't find it in my bookmarked pages.

Quite possibly. It was something like that. The tone of it was rather cheeky, almost sarcastic in some spots

I don't know why people buy BMW (aka Canon) when you can get a good Audi (Nikon). Yet some people prefer their Acura (Pentax) and for others some go extreme with Ferrari (Leica). I don't know why there are so many models of cars out there, but people keep buying them.
As long as the car gets you where you want to go you should be good. But, I would place my bets on a bonafide race-car driver in a ford fiestiva than a 15 year old in a Aston Martin any day. |

For a good example of 'the photographer is more important than the camera, consider this 4th-place winner, which was shot with an Apple iPhone.

That is the one. :)
and it is bookmarked, now.
All of that to say this -- if you are comfortable with your camera and it suits what you want, then it is great.
If you are wanting to "upgrade," my personal recommendation is to get to a camera store and actually hold them. If you can find one to borrow or rent to "try out" even better.
Canon is good. Nikon is good. Any of them are good if they fit your hand and do what you want it to do.

Hmm well I first learned to shoot REAL pix with a Pentax K 1000 (SLR, this was back in the stone age). Went digital with a Samsung, then upgraded to a Canon Powershot, and now I own a Nikon D40. All of these cameras taught me something, and I shoot with both the Canon and Nikon regularly.
So, as others have said, Aleema, if your camera is doing what you want it to do, stick with it! And welcome to the nightmare that is dpc :-) |
