I'm taking a two day trip to LA in a couple of weeks and am looking for 2 things.
1) Any good camera stores that I should check out
2) Any good locations to go shoot. I know there are 100s but where do the locals go? I am staying in Hollywood and was thinking Venice Beach would be a fun place to shoot, but beyond that I don't know where to start.

Santa Monica Pier, La Brea Tar Pits, the oil wells along La Cienega ... |

1: Samys Camera - Online prices are comparable to B+H, but in-store the clerks mark things up a bit (commission perhaps?)
2: LOTS of stuff to photograph in LA. Venice is cool, just watch yourself down there. Head over to the Santa Monica Pier for cool sunset shots if you're there at that time.
You're real close to a great overlook on Mulholland Drive above the Hollywood Bowl.
The Griffith Observatory has an AMAZING vantage point of the city too, plus lots of neat things to see and do up there.
Also, check the other thread for the Poppy Reserve. It's about an hour from LA, but looks like it might be a good year. You can also hit Vasquez Rocks on the up or back.
I can go on and on, but gotta run. Have fun!

I used to love Samy's, but they've lost me as a customer for good even though I only visit LA occasionally. Their in-store markup is obscene. The sales staff seem to have better things to do than cater to some peon amateur or someone who's not a Pro or Hollywood customer.
My advice is to go to Calumet:
1135 N. Highland Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90038
As for other stuff, well, Calumet is close to Hollywood Blvd. That's worth a drive, a bit touristy, but it's worth it to check out Grauman's Chinese Theater and the walk of fame.
A walk on Rodeo drive to window shop is pretty amazing too.
Drive down Sunset Blvd towards the beach. Don't forget to eat a burger at the Sunset Grill across the street from Guitar Center. If you're a Don Henley fan, or even if you're not, you've probably heard the song "Sunset Grill". This is the place that inspired the song. |
