this difference is amazing...it's mostly in color and contrast. straight out of the camera it's unbelievable, w/ the 85mm 1.8 especially.
i'll post some shots hopefully soon comparing the 20D with the 5D, straight out of the camera under the same lighting conditions if you all want.

Yep, but FF is still an expensive business...although in the long run, the cropped sensors will fade out against the FF sensors, I still can't justify the price at the moment! Besides, the FF cameras probably need very good quality lenses (and very expensive)...
There will be a time where FF will be available on a larger scale (price ~ 1000-1500 $), but it will not take place in 2008.
It would be interesting to see if Nikon will release a competitor to the 5DII...I think they will!

Stop it. I can't take it any more. I love my 20D. I don't want to know that there is more out there. (I'm in denial.)

Can't wait to see comparisons between cropped and FF. You're totally right about the differences though, i had to (unfortunately) borrow a friends 5d for a shoot and i really really didn't want to give it back.
I tried the whole "what 5d?" thing, but no cigar.
I'm still unsure whether to hold out for whatever replacement they cook up for the 5d or just bite the bullet and get one now. The rumour mill seems to have quietened down recently. |

no sorry, that's the rumour I meant. Since that one has surfaced nobody else has come forward with anything else.
Thing is, if it comes out at $3500, i can pick up a not-very-used 1ds mk2 for about $3750 so i'm still undecided. I have the money, just not sure where to throw it. |

I hope the rumour is true but it doesn't look good.
I had a chat with a large retailer in Sydney yesterday and was informed that the "rumour" was just that a rumour and not to hold my breath???
Here is a quote from an Australian web-site that has a lot of pro-members and is very credible:
My contacts at Canon have advised me, that to their understanding the April 22nd announcement is not true, and the camera specs are laughable at best.
I cant name anyone specific, but they have on good authority that the camera will not be released or announced before September.
Sorry to burst yor bubble.

New 5D or not, the "old" one is awesome, and I will be using it for quite a while longer. |

is there anyone who owns both the 40D and 5D who can put up a side by side comparison? |

I recently upgraded to the 1D, but the 5D will probably still be used just as much when I start shooting weddings again, the 16-35 lens is fantastic on the FF sensor of the 5D.
If I had to give up one of my cameras now it would be a hard decision to choose between the 5D and the 1Dmk3, seriously, the 5D is just fricking awesome. (in fact I would go as far as saying that the 5D image quality is slightly better)..
Glad I didnt have to chop in the 5D to get my 1D. |

Everybody with a 1.6x sensor gushes over the Canon 10-22mm EF-S lens. Just think, the 17-40 is practically the same. |
Pretty much the same, yeah. Remember, though; the main reason we gush over the 10-22mm is that it is free of distortion at the wide end, which is REALLY hard to do at 10mm. The 17-40 is a killer lens, for sure, but one would EXPECT distortion-free performance in that range.

Its a really hard question to answer. the 40D, from the reviews and the limited amount of playing around on one I have done is a really really sweet camera. Things that it has that the 5D would benefit from are sensor cleaning, faster FPS, slight weather-proofing (I believe the 40d is slightly weather proofed).
However, the 5D is 12mp with a proper big sensor, so that means incredibly low noise and very very high image quality. Its slightly chunkier thus feeling more `pro`. With the 5D you need good lenses to get the full benefit of the FF sensor.
Obviously there is the price to consider as well.
Personally, I dont like 1.6x crop factor cameras, the view-finder is far too small for my liking, the 1d is 1.3x and thats on the edge of what I can deal with (some of us still like to manual focus from time to time) but going back to the 5D is always a joy beacuse of that huge bright viewfinder.
Bear this is mind, the 5D is over 2 years old now, and amongst a lot of photographers is still a hugely desirable camera and Canon are still shifting them off the shelves. This came out between the release of the 20D and the 30D and still its going strong.. I think it will always be remembered as the DSLR that Canon got `spot on`.. I doubt I will be getting rid of mine any time soon. |

What vignetting, if any shows up with the 5D/17-40 combo? I want need a 5D and think it would pair beautifully with the 17-40. |

mpeters: you don't need to buy a 5D. It's an overrated camera ;) of course i say that because i shot w/ a 20D for a few years and never touched the number of ribbons you currently have ;)
it's far worth it my friend. the image quality _I_ noticed was enough to justify the investment. i needed something that handled noise better for my low lit weddings, and I got just that.

Just ask my wife if I need it! ;)
I like the 20D and love the images it produces... But, I really want the full frame for landscapes and the lowlight performance for weddings is a major plus as I seem to have a few of them popping up from time to time. The 85/1.8 is sweet on the 20D, I can only imagine it on the 5D. Looking forward to seeing your 17-40 shots. mark |

One major problem that I found with the entry-level FF camera (Canon 5D) is when using long focal length, i.e. 200 mm and longer. In order to get the same amount of information obtained from a Nikon D300 (approx. 12 MP) mounted with a 200 mm, the 5D will need a 300 mm (expensive, way too expensive if f/2.8).
IMO, the FF sensor of the 5D would have been much more attractive if the resolution was much higher (24 MP or higher).
Things are going to be more interesting within the next 5-10 years.

Does the 5D have better lowlight performance over the 40D? |
