You know what, I have been (of course) going through watching his videos, they are pretty amazing.

This one Under Pressure, is amazing. Every single thing is related to a beat in the song. I had never noticed that before, just watched the video.

But after reading some points on this thread, I am looking more deeply into videos, they are pretty friggin great!

The metal/hair band era had some great voices... I know I'll get hammered for some of these.

Sammy Hagar - solo and Van Halen (sorry David fans, Sammy had the edge on voice, although David was a better showman)
Vince Neil - Motley Crue
Geoff Tate - Queensryche
Klaus Meine - Scorpions
Rob Halford - Judas Priest
Sebastian Bach - Skid Row
Mark Slaughter - Slaughter (ear-piercing live voice)

-just a few, in no apparent order

Ah man, sebastian bach ruled the roost of 80s cock-rock/hair metal.

Good call.

also, though, i don't really think of these as being great vocalists, they are great songwriters and they are my 'favorite' vocalists....

john cale
nick cave
leonard cohen
tom waits
bob dylan

Now here is someone with very good taste!! They are all excellent songwriters and Nick Cave is a superb writer with the most haunting voice I have ever heard for a singer.

nick cave is the most charismatic singer i've ever seen. :)

he died before he could finish the video, so Brian May finsihed it for him after his death

ekk can you imagine writing this song when you know you are dying, gives me goosebumps

Are you sure? This was from the "A Kind of Magic" album in the mid 80's. The time he had real trouble with were for tracks such as "The Show Must Go On" where he had to really push himself for the takes and then was suffering between takes.

I remember being in the Hairdressers getting my hair done when I heard the news of his death.

Its amazing what you remember, the whole of England prettymuch shut down and for several days they showed nothing but tribute on TV for him.

MInd you, the day before he died was like the first time we had heard that he had AIDS, but he held a press confrence and said he was fine. ummm not

Yeah. I think you'll find this was filmed before the Magic tour of '86, in which case he wouldn't of even known!

I miss Freddie. Glad I have lots and lots of CD's by Freddie and Queen.

Freddie who?

:)

Never a big fan. Certain songs I liked. But as far as being the 'best vocalist ever'...he was good for what he did, bet not the 'best ever.'

bump, 'cause this thread can't die!

I have been a Queen fan for years, 35 to be exact, when I bought Seven Seas of Rhye. Freddie was superb at what he did, but the rest of the band had some input!!

Best vocalist is a heavy cross to bear, and there are many contenders. Everyone has a favourite, each one is special in a certain way. I think we should just embrace so many great vocalists in all genres, and agree that the crown of the best is a personal thing:)

Oh c'mon now, why did you have to go and do that? ;)

eta: I was going to chime in here and say that Freddie is the only male vocalist that gives me goosebumps. I'll amend that add Rick Astley - but not in a good way.

Omg, I used to know Rick Astley, he was so short, and that is all there was about him really

no doubts people. Freddy is the best.. improvisation, singing live, singing a cappella, etc. Nobody can do it as well as him

aarenas is the best resurrector of dead threads. Ever.
11/17/2008 05:47:52 PM · #145
aarenas is part of a Freddie Mercury Tribute Band!! Also known as Queen For A Night or Kind Of Magic!

I actually went to see Kind Of Magic tribute band a couple of years ago and it was a great evening out in Southampton. There is more, but that is a whole different story:))

Steven Tyler
amazing frontman
amazing band

and the singer from supertramp
dont know his name, sorry!
11/17/2008 07:19:01 PM · #147
you're ALL wrong :)

Jón Þór (Jónsi) Birgisson from Sigur Rós is the best vocalist ever.

Robert Plant, Stephen Tyler, Sting, etc etc....

These were all great ones but none are even qualified to carry Freddie's microphones to the next arena.

Under Pressure is by far my favorite song ever. I loved what they did with it in Grosse Point Blank too...
