Hmmm. That's something that I've noticed is true of humanity in general.

See what I did there?

What makes me REALLY sad and makes me not want to enter another challenge again is this:

How can so many people vote so poorly and leave me with just 1 comment that is not even constructive. It says "what is this".

I'm so fed up of entering, scoring low, and only getting a handful (if I am lucky) of constructive comments.

How am I to improve if no-one leaves comments on what I should improve upon (in a constructive way).

As a relative "newbie" and not well known person on DP, it seems to me that the same groups of people win most challenges and people like me don't stand a chance.

I set a goal to comment on 100% of the photos in the b& w challenge so far I am 53% dont. I have also recieved a rude PM from a photographer on this site, and I did notify SC. But I am not letting this effect my commenting.... On the flip side I have recieved 5 PM's that were expressing appreciation for the comments... so im not letting the 1 bad apple get me down. I know how valuable comments are and how excited and greatful I am when I get them on my shots.

True. There are a bunch of people here who are truly awesome photographers, but winning the contests is not the only thing going on here. There are a lot of mini-programs going on here that recognize succeeding in other aspects of photography. Oobie & Yappie awards, Posthumous ribbons, Team suck, the 100% comments club, side challenges. There's a lot here for non ribbon winners. Actually, I think guys like us are getting more from this site than the usual gang of ribbon hogs. (I still gotta admire their sheer talent, though.) One thing I particularly enjoy, is when I find someone doing really nice photography with very modest equipment, such as all the great images that liberty has done with a Kodak Z710.

As an example of a non ribboning success here, my "Peace" entry scored fairly low, but I consider it a success nonetheless. I got some great comments on it, including one person who said it made him a little angry (It was all very polite and I think he gave me a reasonable score). But it let me know my image conveyed a message.

I don't concern myself with winning a ribbon. I'm really competing against myself, to improve what I am doing. My father was not a person to give cheap praise and he taught me well in that regard. Maybe that's why I like this site.

OT from my original post, but could someone explain the above to the newbies lik eme. I discovered what the posthumos is, but I am not sure what most of these are. I have seen reference to them on profiles, but haven't searched them out.

This happens all the time. What I have taken to doing is looking at the shots that did better then mine and seeing what sets them apart from me as "better" (keep an open mind here as voting is a matter of taste) and then I look at the shots that were "not as good" and I try to improve how I setup and process my shots all the while not compromising what I see as my style of photography. I tend to shoot just about anything and I'm up for shooting new stuff all the time. I keep things fun and put on a thick skin when I post an image I like remembering that my taste won't appeal to everyone and sometimes to no one at all.

This site is full of wonderful people and photographers who do this as a living. I look at there portfolios and try to see how they do processing and if I have questions I PM them and ask. I have yet to have someone not answer me back. Even the BEST people on this site produce shots that don't win. So please keep that in mind when you post an image. Do photography that makes you happy and be content with the results. In the end it really is you that you have to please.

Everyone here (in my experiences anyway) are always willing to help and will lend a hand when they can so don't be afraid to ask. That's what I do and I have always gotten help and now I feel better about the shots I enter in the challenges.

Just being on this site and doing lots of the side challenges as well as the entry challenges has helped me to improve so stick to it and I hope you can achieve a level with photography that makes you happy.

Don't give up and always remember frustration is the first step to success.

All the best to you and yours

MAX!

Click the DPC Critique Club box if you don't get any comments. I haven't done so yet, but would if I got no comments to help me figure out what was wrong with my picture. Also sometimes there are forum offers to critique your no-comment picture.

The latest Team Suck thread. Make sure you read the first post in that thread to see what it's about.

OOBIEs and YAPPIEs

For side challenges, go to Community, forums, Side challenges and tournaments, then check out some of the threads. I highly recommend side challenges as a way to learn, get feedback, learn to GIVE feedback, and meet other DPC'ers.

For Rainbow-Coloured-Soul, feel free to start a thread after a challenge asking for feedback on your entry, but also be prepared to get it! :-)

It's really gutting to receive 1 comment on something which is perceived to be crap.

Thanks, and the PM was much appreciated.

I will start a thread.

As long as people are constructive in their comments and not nasty, I will take it absolutely on the chin... and grow from it.

I can see why many folks don't comment on the pictures in the mid-range (4.5 to 5.5). However, the comments, even negative comments are informative and usually appreciated. After all, something in the photo has prompted the commenter to write about it.

This thread has made me appreciate even the worst opinions on my photos that are put in a constructive. I will always be willing to suck in my pride (trust me, there's a LOT of it!) if any of you have insight on making my photograph and photography better.

But on the flipside, I was looking back at some comments from a couple of years ago that I had marked as helpful- I think I automatically marked them all such, just because it was nice to get a comment at all- and I've seen comments as nasty as "meh." What purpose do those type of comments serve, other than inviting a nasty response?! I'm glad that the first SC official to post in this thread asked for the original comment- I'm not defending negative reactions towards comments at ALL, but some really do invite it. Even a couple of prominent people on the site have left dumb comments like that!

So I'm done ranting (for now, hehe).

Ummm. What's "nasty" about "meh"? No, it doesn't say anthing constructive, but I'd read it as the viewer/voter telling me there wasn't much exciting about my image. Kind of a take it or leave it summation.

I left a comment today simply stated as "Yikes!!!". That was my reaction to the photo and I couldn't find anything positive or constructive to say about it.

See, now I'd find that both positive and constructive. I try to imagine my entry on a gallery wall, while I stand unobtrusively off to the side. You walk up to my picture and go "Yikes!" Is there anyone here who doesn't think this gives me valuable feedback as to how my image has affected this viewer? And more importantly, that it had an effect -- that it wasn't just one more section of wallpaper lost in the crowd.

For someone to take the time to say anything about how the image affected them is valuable feedback as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, I appreciated that. :)

Seriously you left me a very constructive comment about how I might do post-processing on the image. While helpful, I'm not sure I have the post-processing abilities to pull it off. :)

Any comments are better than none, and I actually value the negative ones much more than the comments of "nice photo".

LOL. I probably can't pull off the post-processing either, but I have a general idea of "what can" be done. :-)

Maybe it isn't so much 'nasty' as it is passive (which I think goes against the whole point of the comment system). If you think it's "meh," tell me what you find meh about it!

If you can read people's minds when they leave one-worded comments, that's great. I just like to pick peoples' brains. :)

edit: And I think "nice" and "great shot" are just as passive and useless.

Well, that's a whole different thing. :-D

I agree that "nice" and "great shot" are passive ("meh" too), and certainly undescriptive.
