This looks like an amazing deal what do you guys think? Do you know anything about that online seller? I called the website and they said it was a USA model, USA warrenty, not gray market.

//www.fotoconnection.com/viewitem.php?IndexID=4294&RefTag=dealtime#

and, they said its avaliable in 2 weeks! :o

Never shopped there before, but I usually check out the store rating at epinions or bizrate before buying.

Here's the rating that they got from epinions. Seems like a mixed bag. Some good expierences mixed with horrible ones.

These guys have a good rating. Its only 10 bucks to ship ground :o. I have 1 day to return my 717 to circuit city no questions asked. should i do it and get the 828 in 2 weeks?

Here are some questions you should ask anyone you plan to mail order your camera equipment from:

1. Does the product have a US warranty card in the box? If US warranty doesn't matter, then skip this quesiton.

2. Does the equipment come with all items that are normally packaged with it from the manufacturer?

3. Do you have a no hassles money back guarantee?

You would be surprised at how many online vendors sell grey market equipment and tell you that it has a US warranty. They aren't actually lying to you by telling you this is most cases, but your camera may have to be shipped overseas to get it fixed if you have a problem. Some dealers who sell grey market product in the US will handle this 'warranty' service for you but you could be without your stuff for a long time if it needs warranty service.

Some dealers advertise low prices.. too low to seem true. Sometimes they unpackage the product from the manufacturer and charge you extra to buy those items that normally come with the product.

Some dealers try to sell you a bunch of overpriced extras to go with your bargain camera, and when you decline those extras, the camera suddenly becomes out of stock.

I have run into all of these scenarios in the past. Take your time and know your vendor. In recent history, I have decided to stop shopping for bargain basement prices and deal with a vendor who I know is reputable. To me, it's not worth the hassle to save a few bucks.

Thanks for your imput setzler. What about the cam itself? I have a 717 now ive had for 13 days and I have tomorrow to decide to return it to circuit city (no questions asked). The 828 comes out in about 2 weeks so I wouldnt be w/out my cam much (not that ive had it a long time..). What do you think setzler, are you goign to upgrade? I see your still on the 707, you going to go for the 828, if you decide to upgrade?

Setzler already bought the Canon 10D, so he won't be upgrading to the F828. For you, Mad, I say take back your 717, and wait until the 828 comes out. If the pictures from the 828 are as good quality as the 717, go with that. If you don't like the 828, you can always just get the 717 again.

Yes, the F828 looks like a very cool camera and, yes, it looks like a good deal (even if some of the comments in the URLs suggested by lykofos are really scary)..
But I would like to catch this opportunity to invite people to ask themselves if and when a new camera is really needed.
My F707 is a fantastic camera and I feel like if I have not yet done with it...
I mean.. do we stress our cameras enough to their potential before buying a new one?
If we didn't, it is reasonable to expect that the new one, as powerful as it can be, will not make excellent photos for us anyway....

I don't know what to tell you. If you want the 828, then you should take your 717 back. What I would do is call best buy (or wherever you bought the camera) and ask them when they will be getting the 828. Tell them your situation and see what they will offer you. If you tell them you are bringing the 717 back because you want the 828 instead, they may offer to let you keep the 717 until the 828 becomes available so they can salvage the sale they have made to you.

It would be worth a try.

Why don't you just take back the 717 now, get the 828 and if you don't like it, take it back and re-purchase the 717 or whatever other camera catches your fancy?

Well, ive had the 717 for 13 days and taken over 1400 pictures and im going out of town soon to visit some friends and go to a wedding and want the cam for that. And, its goign to be a good 400 bucks more than mine. Not sure if that extra 400 bucks is worth it. I mean, I did my homework before I bought the 717 and I still think I made a good choice. I guess, im looking at the grass on the other side.. ;)

Don't worry, you probably made the right choice. The 828's pixel density is way too high for good output at larger print sizes (8x10) using reasonable apertures (f/8).
On the other hand, it seems most people don't care much about visible diffraction. See if you do, then make a decision.

Oh, more reseller ratings for PC Connection and FotoConnection
