Week #5 Title: "Your Chariot Awaits! The Choice Is Yours!"
Classic Ladies have become one of my all-time favorite photo subjects. I owned a '69 Ford Pick-Up Truck (long-wheel base, 350 engine, F-100) while I was in high school (late '70s), and I have loved classic vehicles ever since.
There is something truly elegant about a lady who is confident with few words, and is at peace with a man by merely being in his presence! THIS is mutual admiration, My Friends! :)

Oh dear, 104 shots still to comment on! Will try to comment on all shots up till my wk6 submission (about 30) before I post my wk7 shot. Then I'll choose and edit my Freb Free Study shot before trying to catch up with a dozen or so comments a day :)

Hey, Look over here! Look! Look now!
Ok, ya'all, here is my question for the next three days.
Here is the idea - if we focus on style of B&W over the next month, it will help us to develop that area of our photography, both in taking pictures and in commenting (and recognizing) what we like and want to acheive. Do we want a theme for the month of March B&W images? Here are some options (and someone may have other ideas).
1) Family
2) Children
3) Silhouettes
4) Portraits
5) Landscapes
6) Street Photography
7) Nope, just keep on the way it is (Free Study in B&W)
8) Some other idea
Now, you can post your ideas here, but I will count PM's with ideas. And, of course, if you decide that you do not want to follow the theme, that is fine. please continue to post and comment.
Any other thoughts or ideas, let me know. I would love to have your feedback.

Weird Bud, I was going to suggest something similar here but then decided to pm you to sound you out! The best part of your idea is not to make it compulsory as I have no chance of family shots in March and not happy photographing other peoples children.
I like the idea, would it be a different theme each week or all month?

Great idea, but similar to Ecce Signum I have no option for family/children/portraits (and I am not limited to March in that regard!).
But, how about each participant has to pick one of the options and stick with it? |

Although I have a family, they are not keen on posing for me. Love the idea of a theme though. |

Actually I don't care for the idea. One of the things that made this side challenge interesting to me was that there was no theme beyond the B&W. I've enjoyed the variety of shots seen so far. If suggesting a theme will reduce that variety on any given week or month it will take away from the enjoyment for me.
This is just my 2 cents worth and by the way I didn't overlook that you said that we could decide to not follow the theme. |

in regards to the idea of themeing in march, what if we kept it to more of the technique of bw...
for example:
high/low contrast
desaturated vs. convert to greyscale (still havent figured when to do one or the other)
sepia
or maybe...i dunno, just a thought...

I kind of like the openness of the thread. It's a good contrast to the many other theme specific challenges and side-sides currently in play.

I'm also in the "leave it open" camp, though if individuals want to challenge themselves with a particular topic, that's a good idea, too. I'd like to see variations in conversion if folks try more than one on a shot. For instance, in addition to your weekly submission, maybe add a couple different variations you tried - desat vs gradient map vs CS3 conversion, etc. So if you get a shot that converts very differently with different techniques, you may want to share that! |

Great idea, I will do that for my next post.

A little bit of a variation from my local scenery thing.....this was a rejected Pet Portrait.
Same, same.......desatted by greyscale, then HDR converted for the tonal qualities.

I guess I'm the most happiest about it being so much more photograph and less PP.
I will say that I have gotten more out of this project with regards to technique with PP simply because it's more difficult to make a decent B&W image really good than a color one, IMNSHO.
BTW, I rejected this 'cause both my wife and daughter say that "kitty pitchers" are sooooooo done for Pet challenges! LOL!!!
ETA: I hadn't read the post from aguapreta about changing/directing the theme before I decided to upload this.
ETA II: OOPS!!!! Okay, FIXED!!! LOL!!!
ETA III: When I fixed this, I wiped out the comments.
I just do NOT know how to fix things on DPC that I don't botch something!!!

I like the B&W Free Study option that is going on now. Since I also regularly participate in the themed challenges, it's nice to have a break here with being able to post whatever I want.

woohoo, after a marathon commenting session today I've caught up to last weeks submission of mine (still around 100 comments behind).
So, week 7 and won't be posting week 8 until I've at least commented up to this point ;)
Not your usual B&W subject but think it works quite well (will let you tell me otherwise lol). |

This is a friend of mine that I asked to model for me just for fun and practice, It was a beautiful fall day. Most of the shots look better in color but I thought I could get away with converting this one to B&W. |

Still commenting. Don't seem to get past page 3. Sisyphean, but far more interesting. |

I have no preference as it might be hard for me to follow themes but I would suggest running the themes and keep it optional. Personally, if I wanted to play with themes I would enter Challenges but that doesn't interest me much anymore. I'd rather shoot what I want to shoot. As I see it, it's hard enough to get meaningful images with or without rules...
ETA: I just posted another image because the last one was a placeholder that you may have see...plus it got no comments.

Personally I'd like to keep it how it is, unless the theme is just an option. It's nice to be able to focus on the B&W and not worry about other constraints. |

I like the idea of a theme but not everyone having the same theme. I am going with a theme a month for me. It just doesn't sound like fun to take pictures of something that doesn't pertain to me and my life style. |

I would leave it as it is now - open. But I do like the idea of creating some variety - I want to try being creative and try some new ideas and types of images. So in that line I don't mind having a list of themes that I might try to meet over the next several posting. But I'd make them guidelines as most.

I would be against this. We have themes on this site already, we don't need any more. Trying to find one half-decent black and white image per week is prooving a nice challenge of itself. This seems to me to be one of the more successful side challenges, why change it? |
