cheap aftermarket batteries are always dangerous in any device. however, quality after market batteries are fine, and in some cases, better than first party.

I noticed you are using a 40d. Where do you get your batteries and what kind?

There are numerous threads about this on the boards. The main difference between genuine Canon (or Nikon, I presume) batteries and aftermarket "cheaper" ones is that Canon's have circuitry built in that monitors the charge and prevents the battery from draining too far, which can damage its ability to hold a full charge.

I've found my replacement batteries to be excellent, but once, at an air show, I kept shooting long after I got a low battery warning, and actually got to the camera shut-off point. I replaced the batteries and kept shooting. When I got home, I discovered that that battery would no longer accept a charge. It was one of my Battery Barn replacements. It had always been a great battery, but I killed it.

My moral, many of the after-market batteries are probably fine, just heed your camera's low juice warning and replace and recharge before the run completely down.

i just bought the 40D so i don't have any spares yet, but my second body is a Rebel XT, same as yours. i bought a spare battery from B&H Photo, made by CTA Digital. worked great.
