Maybe even mention it in public where others might agree, but DON'T jump up on a table and start screaming about how intolerable it is over and over again. DON'T spit on others' food. DON'T threaten legal action because your favorite dessert isn't on the menu. DON'T rant about how lousy the service is compared to the burger joint down the street. Even if we might agree with you, the rest of us are trying to enjoy our dinner.

That's what you get for running peace and misunderstanding as the challenge themes this week. You bring it on yourselves, you know.

After all "Congressmen/women" makes and approves the law, and "Police (law enforcers)" make sure lows were followed by the public. Now, this case Langdon is the President who signs the laws...

Does this make sense at all?

Umm....this is NOT a democracy.

That really needs to be understood.

It's much more like a Driver's License thing......it's a privilege, not a tright.

Abide by, and accept the rules, and you get to play.

Flout them, break them, and suffer the consequences.

Some may seem arbitrary or ineffective, but they are what they are.

On no level is any of this required to be fair and equitable, but it sure seems both to me.

Personally, I'm amazed at the amount of intelligent people who constantly argue opposing sides of any issue put forth for what appears to be justifiable debate, when all it is is arguing.

Again.....just my two cents.

What DOES make sense, is that just as an artist/photographer can't and won't please everyone, liking and getting along with EVERYONE in a community is not reality. Take FROM this site what you need or want, and if so inclined, LEAVE something that makes it a better place.

What is happening on DPC isn't that far from what happens in real life, but what makes it better than real life in so many ways, is the power of so many like minds. My life has irreversibly changed for the better as a result of being a member here, the power of networking and making friends and the technical training/learning that one can get from here. Oh and this community has a power button that I can switch off when it becomes more than I need.

Edit to add:
On a side note, in 2 days, I will shooting my first wedding as part of a 2-man crew. This would not have been possible without being a part of this community and what I have learned from it. Hopefully I can aspire to leave 1/2 of what I have taken and make it a better place for others to learn from as well.

Thanks all, couldn't have done it without you (Big old man hug to everyone)

Read my post again. The point is that you can encourage change without ruining the experience for everyone else. It's not a matter of, "love it or leave it." It's a matter of, "If you're going to make others miserable, then you're causing more problems than you solve and might be better off looking elsewhere."

For some justifiable debate is arguing. For others, arguing is considered rude. For some vigorous and robust debate is fun. Others just wish it would go away (luckily enough someone argued long enough for an ignore option and it got added). In many cases, it is a cultural difference. A more eloquent example of that can be found here. Just like the way for some nudity is just a fact of life and for others its a shameful thing that needs to be hidden under a Burkah. DPC is a big tent - lots of different cultures in the mix. The social mores and acceptable practices vary.

As for the idea that somehow this is different from 'real life' - this isn't a virtual world. We aren't pretending to be other people. We aren't voting on WoW pictures. This is real life. Live it for what it is. Real life has a door you can close. DPC is a page you can shut off too. It'll be there when you open it again.

It's very simple: if you're sick and tired of all the whining, bitching and moaning about SC, then LEAVE.

DPC is a planet with "update" gas to keep it's visitors. SC's are spy satellites (which can be shot down from time to time if malfunctioned) control the communication web. The founder of planet (Langdon) has this control room in HQ which switches things on and off (allegedly "random order").

There are a few "major" types of people living in DPC planet now. Canon people, Nikon People, Just voting people and trolls. There is nothing but only one thing in common in this planet for all types of people: "Update gas is extremely addictive" and no one wants to get out (but could only be zapped out by SCs).

um... the founder of the planet? a control room? I think your analogy ran out of gas...

We both live in NJ... there is no "running out of gas" for us. I found it funny (ok, I might be the only one laughing to my own jokes, but hey...)

Why must you say such things and make me feel guilty posting stuff like that... Am I the only one?

(update...update...update updateupdateupdate.....argh... update)... ooooo... feel better already :P

That restaurant analogy doesn't hold water for very long:

If the atmosphere in your restaurant changes so that your regular and new eaters don't like it there, despite interesting food, they'll leave in droves....or the only people left eating will be those who like their steaks cooked well done, or want to see photos of the food before ordering.

Take it or leave it is okay to a point, but you also have to consider why people are upset and if it is an isolated incident or a general malaise.

actually, the restaurant analogy is quite apt.

as has been mentioned by many folks for many months, the atmosphere at DPC has been changing. the forums have been full of tantrums and mudslinging and negativity that have always been around but have lately been drowning out legitimate conversations.

leroy, frankly, was a large part of that. he wasn't the only one by any means, but he was a frequent contributor. and while i don't get a thrill from banning anyone from the site, what you folks aren't see are the number of "regulars" who have left because of the negative bent of late.

so in essence we have identified why people are upset and it does appear to be a general malaise with a few pointed offenders. we took quite a few democratic steps asking leroy to "tone it down" and were rebuffed at every turn. we simply acted in the greater interest of the site.

Ditto! My photos should be appearing in Roadbike Magazine (national publication that will actually pay me!)next month and it could've only happened with what I learned here. And I believe the restuarant analogy is perfect to how to affect change without the drama. Congrats to you to Brad! I've always admired your common sense, perserverance and ability.(all while remaining human)
