I just bought the camera 1 week ago and have 1 more week to decide if i want to keep it. Im looking for an all around exelent cam, under $1000 w/ similar features as the 717. Ive experience what i would consider problems w/ the auto focus of my 717, not sure if the 1/1000 shutter speed is a flaw or i just need to learn the cam better. I like the Canon 10D but it dosnt have any movie mode. Any suggestions?? |

If you want a movie mode buy a camcorder. If you want a good camera buy a 10D.

I guess my real question is, is there a "best of both worlds" ? |

If you wait a couple more months, the Sony F828 will come out (8 megapixels) for about 1000. |

I was just reading up on the Sony 828. It looks awesome, but is boasting a $1200 dollar price tag and alot more size/weight than the 717. 640/480 @ 30fps does sound hella sexy tho.. ;)
Any 717 owners have any tips for me to take better focused action pictures? Any way to decrease the time it takes for auto focus to do its thing? |

Try checking out the new Minolta A1 - it updates the Dimage 7/7i/7Hi for still photos and has a decent movie feature. Prices are $900-1200. |

If you know where your action is going to be in terms of focal depth then I focus on that area, press the shutter button until focus locks on and then hold it, waiting for the action to come into the FOV. You've just got to be careful not to press down or release too early.
It sometimes helps to do this rather than using manual if the focus changes depth dramatically, such as a football match.

You have several options for improving the performance of the focus. You could change your focus to manual and set it to infinity and use the smallest aperture posssible at 1/250 or 1/500 shutter speeds. You could also read up on hyperfocal distances and setup for shots where you know the action is going to be a certain distance away from you.
Your question brings up an interesting point. Consumer digital cameras have this 'movie' mode and the professional models don't. Someone made the comment here earlier about buying a video camera... If you want to shoot video, your results would be much better with one of the cheap digital 8 camcorders.
Sports and action photography requires the extremes in cost and equipment to do it well. You need fast lenses. Consumer grade cameras are not geared towards this type of photography. Even the Sony 828 will probably fall short of your expectations.

I was just out looking at an upgrade yesterday and while talking to the two salesmen something they pointed out to me is memory card issues. They strongly recommended staying with a camera that uses a compact flash card over the memory stick. When I asked why they said it is universally available and that they have seen a trend to go with compact flash cards over sticks and smart media cards in DSLRs. They claimed the compact flash card is much more durable.
Hey that makes my decision easier. One of the two I was looking with uses compact flash cards. |

If I'm not mistaken, the Sony 828 will support compact flash.

So, if I want exelent still photagraphy go w/ the 10D? And if i want decent pics and movie mode stay w/ the 717? Is there not another cam like the 717 that you think is better for a comprable price? |

As already suggested the minolta 7i is very good and has both. |

It does (support both memory stick and comapact flash).
The 717, without a doubt is faster to focus than the 7i. If I were to upgrade, I'd seriously consider either the 828 or the 10 D/300 D, depending on how much you want to spend. The 828 uses a new colour scheme (not RGB) adding another colour (emerald) to the spectrum. According to those who've tried the prototypes, the results (colour rendering) are spectacularly better than anything else out there.
The 7i, IMO, is a battery hog. Both 717 and 828 have a fast, built in charger. The batteries last longer than anything I know of, too.

Are any of you going to buy the 828? Should I really wait and spend the extra money on an 828 or stick w/ the 717? Is it that big a difference, other than the 8mp? |

You should wait until official sample pictures from a production F828 are released. I really want the camera, but I'm worried about increased noise problems from the small sensor, but there's nothing to say about that until some samples are released, which hasn't happened yet. So, get excited, and wait some more. |
