Ok, let's open this can of worms.

After all, I have just opened it for myself and then.. why not share it with my friends on DPC? Do I not love them too?

I took a (forced) rest during the last challenge (Urban Landscapes) and, in fact, the overall quality of the competition raised immediately and very sensibly.

Therefore, feeling indirecty responsible for that leverage, I decided to take extra-care in shooting for the next one (even if that is the most secure way to get an 4.2 average but I just could not help it) and I ended up with not one but three, IMHO, decent candidates.

When it came the time to choose "the one", I noticed something that I hadn't before, something so relevant, not related to the specific challenge nor to the three photos I was examining.

Something striking and, somehow, very depressing.

Shortly.. I realized that THE PHOTOS WE SUBMIT, sized 640 at most, ARE THUMBNAILS.

What's the problem??
Would you judge a photo by its miniature?

As there are photos which looks better than others in miniature size so there are photos which looks better at 640x480....

What I am provokingly telling you is that it should not be DPC but DPWC... this is not Digital Photography but Digital Photography for the Web (and at a very limited resolution).

It's nobody fault.. to raise the resolution at 800x600 would not change it a lot (even if there would be changes). And to raise it more, would require so many more resources to make it possibly not convenient.

However, for whoever loves photography and details, this is definitely a spoiler...

My final choice, on my candidates, it has been not to "cheat". I have chosen the pic which I believe to be better in absolute photographic terms even if I had another one (much richer in colors) that was more impressive at the limited resolution defined for the submissions.

I wonder if someone else, more experienced of DPC, has ever realized this very hidden issue and if it has ever been mentioned or just annotated in some apocryphal and forbidden book.

Enjoy your portion of worms. =)

Wait until you realise that not only are you looking at a small, low resolution representation of the image, but that everyone sees the colours differently and that the tonal relationships are different on everyone's monitors...

It gets even more freaky when you realise that your entry will look even more different when viewed on the various monitors of the viewers. Perfect to you, dark to others, and vice versa. Plus there are different sized monitors and different screen resolutions.

Mistery Men 2?

Mistery Men 2 was a reference to a remake we could do about a movie I liked a lot. (Jacko made me laugh too much).

I have looked for "rush limbaugh" on Google and find his website but he is a complete unknown to me so I did not get the reference.

the reference is are you on drugs...jk, anyway i don't really agree that because you left, the challenge entries increased in quality, you give yourself too much credit. just keep submitting, gain some respect so that when you make outrageous posts people will try harder to listen to you.

Well... in the good Old West there was only one way to gain some respect: shooting faster.

Is that what you are suggesting? =)
