Okay, I've just posted the March theme: unnatural light.

Here is mine. I am guessing this is why I need a ND filter? The sky is blown out, I shot this around noon, so the sun was full in the sky.

Added. And yes, that's where an ND filter could help. Although noon is rarely the best time to shoot much of anything because of the harsh shadows.

I've added your shot to the top and commented (so at least that's one person I've actually commented on!). Still gotta get to the rest.
Everyone: don't forget the March theme: unnatural light

Here's my natural scene:
What I was working on here was pushing the limits of my new Rebel XT to see what it could do in near dark conditions. With a 30 second exposure, this looks far brighter than what my eye was seeing after I had been out here for a half hour. I had a lot of difficulty seeing enough to focus by, and to a large extent, manual focusing was guesswork. Auto focus was impossible.
I was also shooting in RAW for the first time. A lot of the raw adjustments in the Canon software seem to duplicate what is available in my image editor, but I realize that since I am working with the sensor data, it has more to work with. I was shooting in RAW + JPEG mode, so I should take the JPEG of this same shot and see what I get out of it.
Here's the JPEG version as the camera saved it.

I'll look over and comment on a few more of the other postings in this thread tomorrow. I need to get to sleep now.

Nice job, yospiff. You're right - the camera will pull an amazing amount of light out of the dark on a long exposure!
I've added your shot to the list at the top.

i want to thank all the commenters and want you to know that i really really really appreciate them. i went and reshot my photo, (maybe jeffrey, you could put it up next to the first image) and tried to apply the advice given in those comments. i did an HDR and now maryo can see what was bugging her before ;)
i also toned down the tone-mapping so it would look quite so processed and cropped it differently, although, this time i didn't have to deal with the water being only partially iced over.
anyway, i think it's better (but i wish the clouds had been there)

Hey guys. I thought this was a really good idea. Shall we do the same for March, but with a different subject?

I think it's being done already with the subject of "Macro". Or is that a side challenge? Not sure if there's a difference... |

I think the macro thread is a separate side challenge from this. I'll PM levyj413 and see if he would be willing to comment again.
