Oh! I thought it was a challenge/exchange for February! Did I misunderstand?
01/25/2008 10:55:11 PM · #28
No, you have it right, educatedsavage. The idea is that people entering a photo should do so by around Feb. 1. Then people will comment.

So what's the theme for the Feb shot or is theme a red herring?

Natural scene being what? Non-studio, setup shot?

I deliberately left it wide open when I said "Interpret it as you will." :)

Not exactly. Since I'm asking entrants to explain their thinking, you'll be able to tell us why you think you met the challenge, and I, at least, will take that into account.

I expect that commenters will interpret the theme and compare that to your comments (I intend to, anyway). I do my best to have a broad mind (for example, someone suggested entering a picture of a woman in "Birds" because that's a cockney slang meaning. If your comments on your own shot convince me, I'll give it full credit. being able to share your thoughts is a big difference from normal challenges.

In fact, I'd recommend using this as an opportunity to push the boundaries and then explain why you did it as opposed to worrying so much about precise definitions.

Here are some things I'd consider natural scenes that might not be so obvious:
- Weekday morning chaos with adults and kids rushing around preparing for the day
- a kid lying on her back in an empty field daydreaming
- Someone jumping off a high rock into a river
- a macro of ice
- a wildfire

In other words, it needn't be a landscape or a wild animal.

That's exactly why I said freestudy. What's natural to me may not be natural to someone else. And natural could indeed be a studio setup shot as well since that's natural for a studio photographer.

Maybe we mean the same thing but are saying it differently.

To me, free study means "take anything you want - there's no theme, nothing you need have in your head when shooting, editing and entering. And no need to explain."

To me, entering this project and interpreting as you will means "take something you think meets the monthly theme AND explain how it does in your comments."

Does that make sense?

Yes. I understood it that way. In explaining what we were thinking will help the commenters identify what worked, what didn't and what could be done to get where we thought we were going.

Ok, folks, it's Jan. 28. Please try to post your shot on Feb. 1, to make it easier on commenters. If you're a day or two late, it's no big deal, and I'm sure folks can accomodate even longer delays. But the idea is to give the commenters as much time as possible to get to everyone.

Anybody else wanna sign up?

I just found this thread and often feel that I have to explain the shots I take to others all the time. I find myself sending out PMs to people who leave comments saying DNMC or what the heck were you thinking you know that kind of thing so I think this is right for me. I hope it's not to late to sign up? If not PLEASE sign me up.

If I'm to late than maby next time :-}

Thank you

MAX!

I know it says February but can we post now, or do we need to wait until Feb 1?

Since no one wants to answer the question I'll make one up ;o). The original can be posted in the photographer details.

Heh. I missed your questions.

Feel free to post both if you'd like or just the finished one. Up to you.

I'm going to add links next to everyone's names up top to make it easy to find the submissions. So post as normal in a reply, and I'll keep up.

If you're just dying to show the world your masterpiece, feel free to post it now. :)
