Welcome to DPC! In this venue the voters are always right and everyone's opinion is always respected, even if very few agree with that opinion! I have done my share of opining and it is often very satisfying to rant a bit about some aspect of the challenge in which I disagree with the scoring. But the voters are always right! This photo contest venue is never boring and can be a lot of fun, especially if you don't take your own work too seriously to enjoy the efforts of others. Some very heated debates occur here and DPC has evolved into a very well governed contest. The 'prizes' are always virtual, so this is a purely intellectual artistic enterprise with a lot of knowledge and expertise to be gained. Time well spent.

Ok, so we can not have a background, should we be limited to only the subject and a small ammount of black or white background?
I think not!

I can see this going to crap in a hury lol, a solid colour of even black or white is still a backgound, if this is so then how the heck do you shoot something with NO background? hmmm

Shoot in a vacuum. Space for instance, or some sort of black hole.

Well... it's quite possible that the black hole would distort time around you, making your EXIF date invalid for the challenge. :-/

Ooh blimey its all kicked off in here, if only I had the intellect to explain what I was trying to say better as my words have been taken all out of context, i'm sure if you really think about it you might just get to understand what I was trying to say even if you dont entirely agree, that's okay, was just sharing an observation though not looking for a bashing!

Don't worry, even if you had explained it better I would have still taken it out of context.

Hrmmmm... OK, I understand you didn't mean to bash. You're discussing a phenomenon we see a lot of, where exceptionally nice images that lovingly explore a particular subject are shoved off the top tier in voting by images that, while they DO meet the challenge, depend for their aesthetic impact on dramatic natural surroundings.
Do I have that right? It's understandable to bemoan this state of affairs, to mutter that DPC rewards "bling" more than it does substance, most of the time. That the wrapping paper seems more important than the gift, sometimes. It's not going to change, of course, because these "lovingly wrapped" images are very striking and they appeal to the mass of voters. But it's certainly OK to talk about how we wish it were otherwise.
HOWEVER... (and you knew there was a "but" coming, right?) look at the first paragraph of your original post:
Originally posted by trevellie: Does anyone else notice or get fed up with pictures that have little or questionable relevance to the set challenge, gaining high scores simply because there is a sunset/sunrise, stormy sky or mountain in the background? On our front page right now there is no examples of this which is lovely so probably the wrong time to produce this rant, abandoned buildings was a challenge which showed a lot of examples of this though! |
You can see where the problem comes from, right? In no way do these abandoned building ribboners have "little or no relevance to the challenge"; on the contrary, they DO use abandoned buildings as their topics. No point in blaming the shooters by implication (by calling them irrelevant) when it's the VOTERS, if anyone, you should be going after. The shooters, after all, were "smart" enough to understand what the voters wanted to see, and give it to us.

Rather than decrying the photos you personally feel were over-rated by the voters, why not exalt those you feel were overlooked; you my find greater satisfaction in this thread. |
