My parents offered to get me a camera backpack for my birthday and told me to pick one out. I'd like one that would fit all of my camera equipment, which I don't have a lot of (yet), plus I'd like to be able to strap my tripod to it. Any suggestions? |

i got one of these and am impressed with it (took it to Peru and it was invaluable), might be a bit much for your requirements - do you have a laptop/need it in the field? How much "stuff" do you have/are planing on having?
Tamrac Adventure 9
I can fit a 30D with 10-20mm on it, my 70-200 down the side as is shown in the pic. A small flash infront of the lens on the cam. A 50mm 1.8 with a 2x tele in one lens compartment, my 17-85 in another and my 105mm macro in another - basically taking up the same space as the pictured 70-200mm - the picture lies basically or that is one big MK1 they have in there... All of it is compartmentalised and padded (apart from the 50mm and the 2x TC sharing a space). Then in the top you can put your packed lunch, wets, toothbrush etc - although i put my external HD in the pop-off pouch for a bit of extra security from if it poured with rain.
Would very much recommned, and the bottom has a place to strap your tripod/monopod to - although you will have to buy the straps separately or just use some straps nicked off any hiking bags you might have around (which is what i have done). |

Those are nice. Where do you attach a tripod?
I got one of these ==> Lowepro CompuTrekker Plus AW Backpack for Christmas. It holds a lot of gear and may be too large for many. One thing I do like about it is my Monfrotto 3021 tripod fits on it well and there's enough backpack to keep the tripod from wacking you on the head! :-D
I use the laptop compartment for holding a lightweight jacket or sweater (this bag does not have a knapsack section).
Good luck in your search! There's a ton of bags out there. A friend of mine swears by his Kata backpack. Check out the manuafacturer websites (Tamrac, Lowepro, Kata, etc...).

The Tamrac Expedition line is very nice as well. I have the 7, but if you don't have a lot of stuff, the 5 might be better suited for you. The Expeditions are a VERY comfortable backpack, even when loaded down with a tripod and everything else. Here's a pic of mine:

I also have the optional large side pockets on there to hold flash stuff. I don't think the large pockets will fit on the 5, but there's a medium size available. I would go into a camera store and try them on for size and see how they feel. I went in for a Lowepro, but walked out with the Tamrac after trying it on. |

I got a lowepro mini trekker classic (but I had to pay for it myself)
It's held up very well with a lot of use and holds a lot of gear - the tripod oc course, and a body, a 70-200 2.8 and flash and 3 or 4 more lenses, as well as a 5 in 1 reflector and filters, batteries, and the like.

Same here:
Had it for a number of years and have been very happy with it. I wouldn't want to carry anything larger, or more gear around. I have to switch out a lens occasionally depending on what I'm up to, but it's definitely not worth it to me to get a bigger bag. Also, I keep my tripod separate to my pack with a tripod strap and sling it around my body. Fast access too.

Dakine Sequence. Better fit than most camera bags, and since its made by dakine, it doesnt look like a camera bag.
