oh, dear. I've put in a ridiculously kooky picture that'll have 80% of the voters trying to burn my village and I'm crossing my fingers it won't be mentioned in any threads.. but good news for the 80% I stand a good chance of being DQed anyway..

Even if it is on the grill, it will be in good taste to me.

Ok.. I'm brand new to the site, and am afraid - after reading this thread, that my poor seagull image entered into the "bird" catagory will be shot down in flames! Are seagulls not good things to enter? Was hoping to get an osprey feeding, or even a decent pelican shot, but the only things flying were seagulls.. Of course, the one I entered has to fly.. It has no legs to stand on.

It has more to do with how well photographed the subject is, more than what the specific object is.

Here's an example of a good seagull shot by MAK

Oh yes!!! I second that!!!! Went out to find a bird...any bird... and ended up with a bunch of Ice shots. If I took any Snow shots I would probably get sick. After shoveling for 2 hours, I don't ever want to see it again...especially through my lens!!

Ok, thanks, I appreciate the feedback!

Just for reference, here's the first BIRD challenge: Birds

That was in JUNE. Wait, what am I complaining about? I am in Sandy Eggo, where -2 is perhaps like 2 below 74 degrees. But it is raining and all the birds are wet and grumpy. Birds here don't deal well with weather changes of any kind.
01/24/2008 10:30:37 PM · #41
In Arizona they go on strike as soon as the weather changes!

Sounds like y'all have some persnickety local birds. I'm glad my neighborhood birds are the cooperative sort. I took my shot in the backyard. It may not win anything, but it was a really convenient location :-)

So all the ribbons and high scores you guys collect on a regular basis from those cool looking icy landscapes not comforting? :P

I was stuck in traffic yesterday behind this,

but I didn't enter it. I was afraid the bird would bomb...

I was out this morning at 9 a.m. in -4 weather, knee deep in snow, it was well worth it, seeing mutiples of about 5 different types of birds, within 20 ft. Now I have to decide.......

It was -5 here this morning, looking forward to the challenge. This and all times are great for bird shooting. In our are we have approx. 20 species of waterfowl, 8 species of gulls, 8 species of woodpeckers, and many other species that can be found this time of year. So, get dressed for the cold and get out and do some shooting. You can always go to a zoo, or nature center and shoot at their feeders. Should be a great challenge. Van

Cheers!! I'm with ya on this..

What about penguins?

Got mine out my front window. It was around 21 outside, so it wasn't horribly cold. Nice and convenient, but without the backdrop of snow like last week, the birds lack that nice plain white background that everybody loves to vote high on around here. Oh well, the shot is at least creative.
