There are things that we've all probably been putting off or didn't realise, that when we finally get round to doing them we realise just how much we should have done it sooner (I'm talking specifically about Photography stuff).
For example, I just received a spare quick release tripod plate to put on my 100-400. Before now I've had to swap my tripod plate from my camera (where it lives) onto the lens tripod mount. It's an absolute life saver and I can't believe I've gone this long without it (i.e. swapping the plate over every time I need to go long and not handheld). Definitely a thing I should have done sooner.
What photographic things do you wish you'd done sooner, so that maybe we can learn from your procrastination/insight! (e.g. learning to use off-the-camera flash, a certain piece of equipment (e.g. ND card) etc)

Shoot RAW. I spent the first year with my old 300D shooting JPEG. Mostly because my laptop at the time could only process them in Canon's DPP, and ran slower than death doing it. But still, what a huge difference once I finally switched over to RAW.

I wish I'd shot people, sooner. Strangers. Friends. Kids.
In general, go find the thing that you are most afraid of shooting, doing, learning, whatever. Go do it for a few weeks.
See how scary it actually isn't.

I wish I had found a mentor or done an apprenticeship before jumping into Wedding photography.
It's been a wild and fun ride, but I could have learned a lot from a mentor instead of just jumping in and winging it on my own.

I wish I had adopted a simple and consistent filing and back-up system rather than treating my computer like an electronic shoe box. The hours and agony spent searching for files and worrying about computer crashes have proven that an ounce of prevention is worth well more than a pound of cure.
Others, learned exposure bracketing; invested in a good tripod and head; purchased an off-camera flash...
Oh! And joined a local camera club. I so enjoy the people I've met and the opportunities to explore new places to shoot. My current club provides plenty of workshops, speakers and outings...all so very valuable to learning and a lot more fun than reading a book! |

I still shoot JPEG because I don't have any way to view/open/edit RAW files!

As for the topic, I just bought a Sekonic light meter. Good Lord, what took me so long??? |

I'm currently running out drive space and I have a million shots to go through. If I had a better organization system, I would be able to identify redundant shots and trim my collection down to a manageable size.

Stop making excuses.
Sometimes I look at the photos on this site, look at my AfterCapture catalogs and I get so discouraged that each time it comes to making a BIG Career decision with my photography I chicken out. The moment I started believing in myself and stopped caring about everyone's opinions.... the moment I stopped comparing myself to others and stopped complaining is when things started going my way.
I should have made less excuses sooner. Who needs a studio, a big tripod or huge zoom lens, hell, maybe that's my niche.
