Think I just jacked my lens. It fell out of my bag when taking it out of the car. Forgot to zip it.(Stoop) At first it seemed ok until you use AF. Somewhere around mid focus there is a shift or hitch in the focus action. It seems to be in focus when I take the shot.
The question is, is it worth getting it looked at and maybe repaired or just looking at some new glass?
Maybe Sigma 17-70mm HSM or wait for the new Nikon 16-85mm VR? |

What other lenses do you own besides the one you dropped?

| Got my old AF Nikkor 35-105 Macro which is actually a very nice lens. Nikon 50mm 1.8 and an old Sigma DL 75-300mm Macro. If I were shooting full frame I'd be alright but that 35 turns into a 52mm so I've got nothing wide. |

my 2 yr old dropped my 70-200 lens the day after I bought it. Busted it. The AF didnt work after that. Lucky for me I had a warranty, so I took it back and exchanged it.
Do you use it a lot? If you do, then its worth it to get repaired. I dont know much about repairing lenses though.
it always SUX when you drop a lens!! |

| I dropped my 18-70 onto a concrete sidewalk. It bounced once off the lens hood, and in that split second I though "phew" because it looked like the bounce would carry it into the grass but it hit again near the mount and then rolled into the grass. I gave it a slight shake and could hear what sounded like some crumbled glass and I thought the worst, but I put it back on the camera and it worked fine. I examined some photos I took with it after the drop and they look fine. That was 8 months ago and all is still well, in fact now when I shake it I can't hear anything suspicious, and the lens looks clear. I think I got lucky -- the only indication of the drop now is the scratch on the lens hood. |

Take it off the camera, and work the focus by hand a few times to see if it feels smooth while holding the lens in several different positions, ie, up, level, down, upside down. If there is nothing crunchy or loose in it, then it likely is going to be ok. I would examine a few test shots of a brick wall or something with lots of even lines to see if things are out of line inside the lens. If all that looks good, then just keep shooting with it. If it fails at some time down the road, then send it off or get another one. They are not too expensive at this time since it is such a popular lens. I have one like it and use it almost every day.

I feel for you. Same thing happened with my Panasonic camera, twice! (stoop stoop). I vowed with my new DSLR that I will never store it in its bag without zipping the bag, even if it's just "for a moment." |
