I've decided to take photography more seriously. This forum has already helped. Do any of you know anything about the New York Institute of Photography course? It's all online which appeals to me, but I'd really like some feedback....are their courses legitimate? Have you taken any courses from them? Do you recommend this method of learning? Any input would be appreciated.

I too am very interested in finding out if anyone has used this course and found it worth their money. I got their free brochure and everything and it *looks* great, but I'd love to have some real-time feedback before shelling out the loot.

I sent off for info on NYIP courses once. When I didn't sign up they started sending me discount offers - it got up to $300 off at one point - so I figure they are pretty over priced to start with. The main negative for me was they required a VCR...

I got the $300 off thing in my email this past week. I also got my student loan money as well this week and I am seriously thinking about going ahead a trying the NYIP out. From people I've heard that have done it liked it and learned a lot.

is NYIP the only online photo school out there?

Depends what you mean by online photo school.

//www.betterphoto.com has some great 8 week instructor lead courses, but that is more in the 'informal class' approach rather than a formal school. There are many similar things, //www.webphotoschool.com also seems to be good, at least from the free lessons, but I don't know that it even has instructor directed courses or not.

so nobody else had any experience with NYIP?

I signed up for the NYIP today. I had gotten my student loan, paid for my classes and books, and had some left over, so I decided just to do it. My wife said that I have to take it seriously just like taking classes at school, then I'd get the most out of it.

After trying out a number of free on-line lessons here, I began to realise that the whole thing is just an advert for Olympus digital cameras and Photoflex camera equipment. Every lesson is based on the Olympus C-4000 Zoom digital camera and requires some kind of Photoflex lighting gear. Very informative, though just one big sales pitch.

If you have a 35mm camera Id really reccomend a basic B&W photography class at your local college.
