They'd certainly like you to believe that, anyway.

I'm reminded of the oft shown footage on CNN during the first Gulf war, of a bridge being demolished. You see the on bomb video feed as it flies right into the ventilation duct they aimed it. Looked very precise. Invincible.

Wasn't for a few years before it was revealed that that was something along the lines of the third or fourth sortie against that particular target and the previous 3 had been misses.

There's an unsurprising amount of hype and propaganda around the accuracy of weapons systems, from the sellers and the users.

from the report:

The US military said the air raids on Thursday were precision strikes on three large targets in Arab Jabour, a mostly rural area of palm trees and citrus groves.

A statement said a joint operation between the air and ground troops required "extensive planning to prevent collateral damage".

It doesn't say the US first dropped a roll of quarters on the area from a mile up and then hit every one directly on George's face

I'm sure it's not really as simple as "blow myself up and kill as many innocents as possible regardless of their religious, political, or military status"

You are indeed mistaken as in many instances it really is that simple. The tactic is to incite fear. It works.

And as I am too close to the situation, quite literally, I shall recuse myself from further discussion. Please carry on.

As an aside, the suicide bombers inflicting their particular brand of destruction in Baghdad aim for as much collateral damage as possible.

In most reports of suicide attacks that I've read they do have a political or military target in mind. But you're right, they also inflict terrible collateral damage. I wouldn't say that's their *aim* though. Otherwise what's the point of traversing through checkpoints to get to the other side of the city when they can just blow themselves up in their local town square?

I'm thinking that walking into a bustling marketplace where people are buying goods for everyday life and blowing yourself up is not giving much thought to "innocent" lives. If you're not part of the insurgency, you're the opposition. It's a very different mindset.

They still aim to kill as many as possible, their target may have a different religious belief, but they are mostly ordinary citizens, just trying to live their lives.

They don't target those who have taken up arms against them, just innocent civilians.

Sunnis will kill Sunnis and Shias will kill Shias. It's how they incite fear into the locals if they want to ensure that there is no collaboration with whom they refer to as the enemy.
