Ok, hate to even ask this. Not because I'm afraid of the responses, (I actually encourage truthful, exactly how you feel comments) but because generally I don't like these kinds of posts. They usually come off as whiny and disingenuous. Lots of the times people who make these posts are not actually looking for answers to their question, they are just looking for a debate. I have never started a thread about a score I got, but this time I have to ask. I too am at a loss as to why I recieved the score I did and just want some more feedback. Particularly if you voted a 4 or lower on my image. I never expect to do all that great in Free Studies becasue they are (usually) everyones best of the best for that month. But a 4.9 on this image, a 4.9!? WTF?
Say what you feel please. I will not get angry or combative. I just simply desire a little more clarification.
Thanks.
-Chris

First instinct on this is that it was shot with a Nikon (time for a payback) *grin*
Kidding aside, there is something uneasy about her chin and arm. Her jaw line continues down to her arm, and both have about the same tone & brightness. Had her arm been darker perhaps or the angle changed a bit on the arm, it would have separated the two better. |

Another thing is that even the "in focus" part seems slightly out of focus. That or you didnt sharpen it enough to "pop" out of the bokeh'd background. The composition is slightly awkward with everything happening and moving into the left hand 2/3rds. The "negative" space should normally reside on the side in which the composition flows into, in this case you are "flowing" out of the negative space which isnt nice on the eye. A crop would remove that problem, but would also highlight the problem of the arm outlined below... having her put it so it created a diagonal from the bottom left to her face and a crop from the right - keeping the ratio and thus a bit from the bottom and top) would have dealt with all of the above, nail the focus on that and you have a really nice shot :)
Hope that helps... |

Well, here are my thoughts. I don't think it deserved an under 5 either as I gave it a 6, but I think some of the comments are spot on. The arm position does detract the attention. I also think something that hasn't been mentioned was something beyond your control. Her dark outfit did not provide the kind of dynamic contrast that you see on some of the really high scoring portraits. The dark hair mixed with the dark outfit allowed much of the frame to meld together without sharp lines and contrasts. Your fault?? NOPE. Technically, I think it is a pretty good shot and that is why I gave it a 6. I think as some others have pointed out there are some soft focus issues on her right side pictures left but that and the arm are really the only technical things to speak of. I think this portrait fell victim to a lack of WOW not a lack of technique. |

Thanks for the feedback. Seems to be a somewhat consensus in the comments. Duly noted.
Thanks!

I thought: "Ok, sounds like Chris here really wants some feedback, even if negative, so let's help him out" and fully intended to comment on the photo.
I looked at it (for the first time, by the way) and made some mental notes. Next I read the other comments which covered everything (and more than) I would have said about it.
So then I tried to find something that hadn't been mentioned yet, but couldn't. And I think that perhaps there lies MY answer to it: nothing jumped out at me.
It isn't a bad photo, but it certainly didn't grab me one little bit. The very direct eye contact is nice, but certainly not unusual. It has some flaws, but nothing unique or particularly wonderful going FOR it. It is just another photo of just another face.
